Do you mean 'how much tread needs to be on tire to be roadworth?'

I think 4mm

Have a look round the edge of the tyre and there will be little arrows pointing to the tread.

Thats where the tread wear indicators (TWI) are, if the tread is worn down to the bar of rubber going across the tread.....they are no good. :D

Oz ADRs say minimum 1.6mm tread depth across the tyre's width.
That's what level the tyre wear indicators should be placed at.

If your tyre has scrubbed one edge to bare but the rest is still full depth, its still no go.

5mm is my personal minimum, wouldn't risk my family's life on anything less.

Usually between 6 and 7mm above the tread wear indicator.

Usually between 6 and 7mm above the tread wear indicator.
Usually depends on the brand too.

From the ones I've seen (very small sample), Firestones are usually like 6-7mm
and most of the other big brands Goodyear Bridgestone etc give you about 8-9mm.

Some tyres have lugs whose gaps only go part way, so when its worn down to like half
the lugs can close up to become 1 bigger one. Think its so that the tyre is less 'squirmy'
when new, but it doesn't help water dissipation when the tyre is past half worn.
