Well, I went ahead and fitted a Magnaflow mirror finish stainless steel dual-outlet muffler. $350 fitted.
Must say the result is better than I expected: very deep, rich sound and the engine definitely revs smoother and harder (the placebo effect not withstanding!). There's no doubt the standard Mitsu/Lukey (Sports, VRX, Ralliart) muffler is restrictive compared to a genuine straight-thru.

BTW - the magna VRX muffler is a straight through. You can look through it.

Exactly, from what i've researched, the difference would be so minimal, like maybe 1-2kw if that. The only reason i'd swap my sports muffler now for a magnaflow (which is the muffler i'm actually looking at getting), is if my exhaust doesn't sound like what i'm after, after iput the pacies and high flow cat on.

Thats Looks sweeet, I will admit when I first seen the thread I was like errrr... I dont like these exhausts, but it does look sweet... But what would look even better is have another on the other side...

Damn sure - I have one in the workshop in front of me at the moment. The long pipe is cutoff at the tail, and you can look down it and see daylight out the dump pipe.

I have a 2001 TJ Sports standard muffler and a 2002 Ralliart standard muffler sitting in my roof.. Both are defintly standard items as fitted from factory by Mitsu..
Sports one is triflow, Ralliart one is straight through..
work that out
Changing mufflers on a Ralliart wont increase performance, just give em a better note :D

No, not suggesting the original Rallliart muffler wasn't straight through. I didn't get this muffler expecting any increase in power and I'm not claiming I've got any as a result.
But there's no doubt it does rev smoother, especially above 4K rpm. It really feels just that bit more responsive on the go pedal. Hey it might be the placebo effect as i said, but I challenge anyone not to feel a difference if they get one.
No drone at all at highway speeds (80 or 100 kmh); a bit of a drone at 2-2.5K rpm if you hold it in gear, but really nothing annoying (and I'm picky). But the payoff is a very serious, deep sounding exhaust note.
Paint finish courtesy of Meguiers polish twice a year!

yeah i was quoted $350 unfitted originally but i had a cry that i get them heaps of business (which i do) etc etc and he said ok the muffler costs me $300 (probably not true) i'll give it to you at cost and fit it as a favour...
i doubt he made no money outa me but i was happy either way :D
btw, once you have a more expensive muffler you'll never go back to the cheaper stuff.. the sound is so much better... no tiny cr@p sounds just nice deep note... quite when driving normal, loud and tuff sounding when you open it up
