View Full Version : Getting TS 4CL
hi all
I want to get an older magna im getting a TS 4cl just to muck around with i went in my mates one yesterday its an auto no mods thing that suprised me that it would change at full throttle 4600rpm.? I had to hold the gears to rev it higher theres nothing over 5rpm and definatly nothing at 6rpm lol suprisingly i thought it would be slow but theres some good torque pull there is there any potentional in these models.?

Mines fairly stock and goes hard, only down fall is not very good fuel consumption, make sure it has a good set of wheels, I get alot of friction (good old front wheel drive)
Other then that just check the condition of the Auto
Get one with low amount of K's

Exhaust and intake mods are the basics and can make your car go a bit harder than stock for under $1k

If its a good price go for it, the 4's go hard and just as hard as a 6 in my opinion, i will prob get burnt for that. Check engine mounts they usually need replacing on this age car. but if the price is right buy it.

i'd say the 6's have got more go than the 4's...for about the same fuel econ.
but u will pay a bit more for them of course.
i miss my TS-SE....

The 4 bangers go about the same up until 100...Thats when the V6 Takes over :)

Yeah in my opinion there about equal to an TE auto 0-100km but they dont rev the V6s rev so much smoother and less harsh than the astron 4cl was the newer astrons better than the older ones TS up to TE

Did you have the trans in 'Power' mode when you were giving it a thrash? In mine, this makes a significant difference to when the changes happen. It will climb to the redline when floored but not unless Power mode is selected. If the trans fluid and filters hasn't been changed in yonks, this might be causing your problem.
They are torquey motors. They are one of the biggest 4cyl petrol engines around, so you'd expect them to have plenty of go. But if not regularly serviced then fuel economy is comparable to a V8.
They are quite a simple engine to work on and there are parts galore available. More mod potential than V6 I reckon as well.

Personally I love the 2.6 engine as it is simple to work on.
However, poor fuel consumption, timing chains, blue smoke etc are some of the things that let the engine down.
Also, the auto 2.6's are terribly painful to get to speed, used to own one.
For me and the Mrs we both have Verada V6's (Mine KE, Hers KR), simply because I do all the maintenance/repairs etc on them and the V6 is more powerful for same petrol usage, also V6 being belt driven eliminates the timing chain issue altogether.

Death to timing chain rattle.

It's the balance chain that rattle's not the timing chain but that can be eliminated with a balance chain elimination kit but have heard it can make your engine vibrate a little more then before I was debating on if I was going to go this way but I went with the whole timing chain & balance chain kit replacement as the elimator kit is not reversable. Now my engine is nice and quite again for another 200000 k's it's what there expected to last for and I'd say it was right cause that's when my started it's rattle.

I got mine removed and idles fine, but I had madmagna rebuild my whole engine due to a garage who fitted a new chain and forgot to release the adjuster.......result......one stuffed engine.
Have a look at the damage, http://www.madmagna.com/ click on "technical" on the left then "When DIY goes wrong"
PS It wasn't a DIY job but an RAA approved mechanic:shock:

power even id say the v6's have more potential. but both are very driveable.
also heads are a big issue on the 2nd gen magnas. you could replace the head on a 4cyl for 3-4-$500 etc but for a set of v6 heads is $2200 last time i checked. make sure u check the car out well coz a cheapy often turns into an expensive venture

Dude dont bother with a 4cyl if its auto, that trannie seriously sucks the life outta the engine.
Even my KS auto trannie doesnt do the V6 engine any justice. But my auto V6 is ALOT quicker then the 4cyl, up to and past 100km/h.
IMHO V6 Manual TS would be the absolute best choice for performance mods, next down is a 4cyl manual. After having my car for well over a year now i am wishing it was manual.
Realistically the 3rd gens smash 2nd gens so maybe save for the newer models, it's well worth it.
