View Full Version : How many km's after fuel light comes on?

I don't make it a habit to let my fuel light come on, but last week I was pondering how many km's the car would run for in town after the needle hits empty.

The Camry was known to run on an oil rag, but what about the TF (wagon)?

Please tell me the facts or guess-timates, or point me to a previous thread which I missed in my use of the search facility:).

Feel free to share any 'stranded' stories (with associated figures if possible).

I have had up to 200 kms after the light came on in my te 3.0 auto sedan. This was done traveling at highway speeds (read steady 110 km/h) and then put in 68l of fuel. Gave me a total of around 750 for the trip including some city driving. Cold round town driving, these figures can be halved. I'm not sure how much fuel the wagon holds but the sedan holds 71 by the book, and I have never run it dry!!!! Hope this has been of some beifit to some one.

Sedan takes 71, I've filled mine up 70+ before without it surging.
Probably 1-2L extra in the plumbing to the filler snout.

Light should come on when there's about 10L left...

But I just got back from servo after filling my wagon with 55L, light just starting to blink on
whilst hustling thru the corners. :P Manual says my wagon tank takes 69L supposedly;
had earlier thought it was 64L and have filled up 64.5L whilst in my care.

I get 100km comfortably, and still only get 63l into the tank, I run my tank as empty as I dare every time, that way you don't build up crap in the bottom of the tank and the day you do need to run it down it doesn't block a filter and stop you on the side of the road :P

P.s: This requires the maintenance of fuel filters.

There are 12 liters left when the light comes on, so assuming you're doing suburban/city type driving you're looking at about 100kms. If it's highway you're on you could see anything up to 200kms (6L/100).

my light comes on at about 55L used (sometimes as little as 51L), which means there's more than 15L left in the 71L tank.

the most I have ever put in the tank is 68.5L, but I regularly put 65L+ in. you just have to be careful going around right hand corners when you're low on fuel.

I usually run on the assumption that I have got ten (10)Ltrs left when light comes on... I think the book states 12, but if it comes on just give the car a few sharp turns to pi$$ the light off lol... If the light doesnt turn off, you damn well u better find the nearest fuel station :D

My cousin in his Camry fills his car to empty. I've never seen it above empty.

As for mine I can't really test it out as most of my driving is done on highways and if I run out of fuel I'm stuffed.

on a related note, I've put 15L ($20) in before and it didn't turn the light off

Thanks everyone. lol @ some posts.

I'll have to conduct better research if it's written in the book?!?

Sometimes my light comes on when the needle isn't on empty...maybe I DO take some corners too fast.

Mine comes on with a touch below 1/8 on the gauge, I get ~100-150 from there, but I only ever do ~50 then fill up.

From my experience that quoted figure in the book is way off tho, if I fill when the light starts blinking thats around the 51L mark, I did that for the first two times and then figured that 51L on a 70+L tank means the fuel light is extremely pessimistic, ever since then, like I said before, at least 100km on the light :) whilst still only putting a tad over 60L into the tank.

Id be rich if i had a dollar every time a mate in my car has said "hey your petrol light is on", like its something I dont know! It comes on about when the fuel gauge is on the second last line, and when i fill up, normally when its just below the last line, I've gone about 80kms.

Yah me too. Although, if you happen to suck up some exceptionally chunky pieces of crap quite often, you can put a bit of strain on the pump. And kill it! My mate killed the pump in his VX doin exactly that.

The light only ever comes on very briefly for me though... it'll illuminate whilst accelerating, and then go away.
