if you want a sub then an amp would be the best way to go
you dont need to get a monoblock a 2ch bridged amp will do the same thing (monoblock would be better do, but depends on your budjet)
buy a decent amp install kit with 4ga wire
they are not to hard to install would be good to have someone with you who has done it before
make sure your deck has pre-outs makes installing the amp that much easier

Running one Amp, you should be right with 8 gauge wiring.
If you're looking at running more amps in the future, I would recommend using 4 gauge wiring.
Lower gauge just means more current to your Amps, and therefore give them as much juice as possible.
Wiring to an Amp, you basically need straight power running from your battery, not from under the dash! You also need an accessory wire, that is basically a switch for the Amp to turn on and off with your cars accessory power. Finally you need a good ground. As short as possible, and the same gauge as your power cable attached cleanly to the chassis of your car.
An of course, rca's from the headunit to the amp!
Running a single sub, you either need a mono bloc amp, or a bridgeable 2 channel amp. Bridging an amp allows you to combine two channels into one and producing more power. The amp must be bridgeable though. Do not try to do this with a non-bridgeable amp.
Running one Amp, you should be right with 8 gauge wiring.
dare you to run a DD Z1 with a single run of 8 gauge :)
no really tho, personally i'd run 8ga for 500W RMS of D class power, or 350W RMS of class AB power, 4ga for 1250W RMS or so of D class power, 800W RMS of AB class power etc etc..

power wire to the amp has nothing to do with how many subs your running, its got to do with the size of the amp, how much current its drawing etc...

Wiring an amp- easy as.
I bought an 8gauge kit from Repco for about $30 and with info from searching the site here was able to do the install inside a day (it was my first time too).
Good luck man!
