Hi there!

Was just wondering which type of spark plugs are better. Thinking of changing all the 6 of the plugs to the same type. Its this advisable?

Whats the difference between Platinum and Iridium spark plugs? Which one lasts longer? Which one is better?

What plugs do you guys use?

Cheers!

i believe that platinum will last longer (80-100k k's), where iridum will give a better spark (but only last 40-60k k's)

i'd reccomend paying the extra and making all 6 spark plugs the platinum. some people say only make the back 3 platinum and just use normal ones in the front 3.

you need to answer this question though, could you be ****ed going to the effort to replace the front 3 plugs every 10-20,000 k's??? where you could just leave them in there for 100,000k's and not worry about it???

I used all six irridiums and new leads, new plenum gasket, couldn't be happier.

I drove 420 kms to Canberra, basically on cruise control 80% of the way with Shell 98RON and returned 37mpg. Delighted.

Hope this helps

So platinum lasts longer than iridium? Any idea why? Anyways if I change them to whatever type of spark plug, I'll use them for the longest time possible? But yeah its expensive to change the back 3 spark plugs so I'll probably go with platinum as they last longer. But these leaves the front 3 spark plugs. I would like them to be the same, but would just changing the front 3 to iridium and platinum for the back 3, would that be any good or just change all 6 of them to platinum?

Any ideas heard that if you change all 6 to the same type it would be better in terms of fuel economy and not sure why nots?

Cheers

The thing is that iridium's are better but they don't last as long and for a person like me the cost of getting the mechanic in the back 3 spark plugs would be costly. I'm trying to find the best compromise between the cost and fuel economy.

the platinum spark plugs don't last as long as iridium, 100,000km vs 150,000km, and iridium provides a better spark. my cars on 91 000km, soon goin to get the whole works changed when i go do the timing belt to more premium distributor cap, leads, and a set of 6 NGK Iridium IX. they have a thinner conducter at the end so the don't last as long (bout 60,000km) but provide the better spark that iridiums offer. should pure along nicely and more efficiently due to better combustion :) also a good idea but not essential, is to reset the ECU, let it re learn the characteristic and timing of the different spark plugs, will run a little bit better, although first 1500km or so may be a bit rough (learning process).

Hi!

Errrr so iridium spark plugs last longer than platinum ones? I'm sort of lost. So which one is better I just want something that will last the longest and quite good I guess you know the best balance with better spark and longevity of the plugs. So if NGK Iridium IX don't last as long as platinum spark plugs what type of iridium plugs would last longer than platinum ones?

Cheers

Platinum spark plugs have a .8mm sparky thingo (sorry just woke up) the IridiumIX which provides better spark and economy but only have a .6mm sparky thingo, NGK produce a Iridium spark plug with a .8mm sparky thingo, NGK rate the platinum at about 100,000km, whilst iridium .8mm is rated at 160,000km, and the iridium IX is rated at 60,000km. personally i would put iridium IX plugs in, as they will give your engine better ignition timing, power, yet provide better economy because of better combustion, 60,000 isn't bad thats like 4 years for me, its not as long as the others but will cost the same in long run if not less. hope that helps. NGK website should give you a better explaination of there product range. if i'm to confusing lol

Hey man Thanx for that. You weren't confusing. It was a good read. Well I'm still deciding which plugs to use. I guess I don't mind using the iridium IX but how much do they cost? How much do platinum cost? Do you actually feel of see better performance if changing to iridium IX plugs? Well again thanx for all that infor.

Cheers

hmmm you don't really feel much of a difference, you'll get a little bit better economy, not much but it builds up if you consider it lasts for 60,000km, performance wise it will just burn the fuel better, you might notice a difference when u really push it as it will burn the fuel rush better but its not something very big, its more for your engines own good.

Hey man!,

Thanx for all that advise. I think I'll go for the iridium IX plugs. How much are they? I've seen some on e-bay and they seem cheaper that those from the shops. Any advise on this? Also may I ask how much did you pay for them?

Cheers

Supercheap will probably have their 20% off on Boxing Day. I paid $12 each for irridium's on special a while back. I know they are more expensive and cheaper in different places.

Just happy to get 6 at once.

Hope this helps.

haven't got mine yet, doin it in about 6 month with the timing belt n all the stuff, watch out for ebay and other markets, although this may sound ridiculess there are a lot of fake NGK spark plugs, don't know why people would make fake spark plugs, obviously they don't care about the thousands of dollars damage they could do to someones car.

yeah they around the $15ea dollar mark, as he says, supercheaps boxing day sale :)

Copper - 40k
Iridium - 60-70k
Platinum - 100k

Iridium's are just as good a Copper ones but just last a bit longer. Platinum's are for long life eg/at the back of our engines cause to change them u have to take the plenum off. Unless you have a turbo car you wont feel any difference between Copper and Iridium plugs. Just spend the $4 a plug on new copper ones cause u wont feel any difference between those and Iridium's.

Copper is the best conducter for you sparkplugs, platinum is not as good just lasts a long time, Iridium is for high temps.

Have you ever consider the markup supercheap had on the plugs? Cheap is not fake IMO.

Just got myself the NGK Iridium IX spark plugs. Was nosing around the NGK website and there was some mention of using a torque wrench? Is that essential?

Also on the box, it says 1/2 - 2/3 turn (with Gasket) or 1/16 turn (Conical seat type).
HUH??

Somebody care to enlighten me?

I have a 3 of Platinum, under the inlet manifold (last longer) and the rest are NGK std, so whatever they are lol.

Torque wrench, dont worry about it, dont have to as long as you do them up tight, but not to tight they will be rite.
