ok...i have a 98 KH rada 3.5. it's got 96,000 on the clock and just had the major service done. obviously it's had the timing belt, air oil and fuel filters, new oil and tune done. had valve seals and something else i cant remember done. pulley's of some sort maybe?

now to the problem. i am getting about 300km a tank around town driving normally with the climate control showing 1 bar for the fan. so it's barely on but just enought to keep cool. i am getting around 480 on the highway sitting on about 105 to 115 on cruise control. i drive fast enough to keep up with traffic and occasionally have a little stab here and there for pesky drivers that think doing 40km an hour is funny but that's about the extent of it. my other rada i had returned figures of around 480 around town and up to 650 on the highway so naturally i am concerned.

i ahve had it back to tyres & more in strathpine who did a diagnostics on it today adn said it is running so sweet it's ridiculous. they checked for cam retard, airflow meter, 02 sensor and injectors. everything is fine. the injectors are at 2.8 Milliseconds which is good apparently. excess consumtion would show readings around 4 to 5. shaun at T&M suggested maybe the catalytic converter was shagged but have had that checked at The Muffler Shop in stones Cnr in brisbane and it was fine. (they do the maddest work by the way. i highly reccomend them. their custom stuff is just crazy)

all in all......can anyone help??? i am keeping logs of how tha tanks go from the next fill up but apart from that i have no idea. any help would be much appreciated. sorry for the full on post but i know you guys love a challenge.

If its started doing it after all your mentioned changes and they disconnected the battery it will probably settle down and the figures should get better with time. My 02 sensor exhibited the same issue as you mention which cured the problem. But you mention that yours has been tested.
Cant really think of anything else cause you pretty much covered everything.

yeah mate, it's got everyone stumped. i am going to call back and see if they individually tested the 02 sensor or just looked for a fault log. pretty sure they would have been thorough though.

have disconnected the battery this morning just to see. i was advised to let it idle for 10 mins before driving it so i'll do that.

saw on another post that someone had an 02 sensor that wasn;t logging a fault and was passing tests but upon inspection it was covered in soot and what not and was practically rendered useless. might also check up on that. i'll keep this thread posted with anything i get that might be of interest

Are you getting any petrol fumes? This would indicate a faulty O2 Sensor.

Pull down a copy of the mitsu service manual there are links on this site. Once you have it there is a great write up on diagnosing the 02 sensor using a multimeter. Shouldnt take you long to work it out to see if this is the problem about 30mins worth of work if that and you can do it from inside the car.

what do you mean by fumes?? from the exhaust?

i've noticed it smells a little after a drive but thought it might just be the new exhaust.

currently on this tank i've gotten 170kms just coming onto 3/4 of a tank. it's crap.

reset the computer by leaving the negative battery terminal off for an hour and have been babying it ever since. i just refilled with 1/8th to go in the tank and 414km done. there was a trip to the gold coast in that so some of it was highway driving. still not so impressed as i figured with 200 odd kms of highway it would have been a lot better. i am thinking of takin the plunge and just whacking a new 02 sensor in it. i'll call shaun back at tyres & more tomorrow and see what he thinks.

will get him to check for any leaks in the fuel system also.

Do the o2 sensor go for a 4 wire universal jobbie wire it in yourself our get your mechanic to do it. Should be able to do it for well under 100 bucks.

o2 sensor?

get a mut-II test at mitsu too see if the ecu is recording any error codes
