hi all.
have finally moved up from a first gen to a second gen magna and have some questions for people in the know...
how hot should the engine run.. in trafic at about 32 degrees outside temp she seems to hover around the half way and just a tad above.. then goes right down when moving for a while.. is this about right??
also the car seems to missfire.. could this be because ultra tune did a service 2 weeks ago??.
and finaly anyone know how much a new timing chain costs installed (ball park) as mine sounds like a rattle snake on idle.....
still for the price it is a supre tidy car..
btw its a tr 2.6 injected motor
thanks alll

Half way is normal operating temp.

Most likely there a dodge franchise for dud mechanics from experince.

Your looking from $500 onwards depending where you by the kit and who puts it in mine cost around $790 and also get a new timing cover as well while your at it as the water pump port is still there from the sigma days and corrides the timing cover. There is also an eliminator kit you can buy if you don't want the rattle to ever come back as it replaces the balance chain this is what rattles it sits behind the timing chain and this is not reversable well it's expensive to reverse it anyway and some people have reported a more noticeable vibration in the engine but other's don't notice.
P.S. Make sure the timing kit is complete as ther are some kits that have missing gaskets etc. and another would be to have the oil pump checked while every thing is off.

If ur temp gauge is all over the shop, i suggest getting it looked at, or at least change ur thermostat and see what happens.
Thermostat and gasket will leave you with change from a $20 note.

depending on where you live i suggest going to "Just magna spares and repairs" to replace the timing chain, they are in parafield off kings rd. They have just changed ownership and the new guy runs the businness really well. I got my timing chain done there cheap, im not gonna say how much, but trust me its worth going to them for it.
If u want their phone number and exact address pm me and i'll go looking for their card
try just tightening the tappets to quieten the noise of the timing chain, it'll do some good, but i think u might hav to do it almost every service to keep it reasonably quiet

Or whack in some 90W gear oil like I did on my TR whilst waiting for a replacement engine to arrive.
Actually, dont do this :)

i tried to do that. found that the tappets are fixed. cant be adjusted. unless someone else knows some magic?

.
i worked for ultra tune.
i found them to be reliable and honest and very good mechanics.
i have no reason to defend them. they made me redundent.

the only reason i doubt themis the fact that the form they gave the car 2 weeks agosays it is basicaly mech a1.... i cant really blame the company whe it is probaly one person but how can a car with a leaky rocker cover, really bad chain noise and a misfire from hell be mech a1..... mabey it was work experience week.....
ohh well.. replaced all the injectors and seals today and still misfiring.. quite bad on full lock as well... any idead.. it has new plugs in it also...

i had the same misfiring problem after buying my 2nd gen. all i did was change the spark plugs and leads, never misfired since. if urs is still misfiring change the rotor, the coil and or the dizzy cap. that should fix it.
another possible cause could be holes in ur leads causing the spark to short out on the block or rocker every now and then. have u changed the leads? if not try that.
hows it goin atm?

go to dandenong. they know magnas inside out. (provided you are in victoria) tell them you are AMC.

What do you mean by "quite bad on full lock".........is there a clicking noise?, if so that is the CV joints.
If the chains are really bad that will also cause the misfire

Tighten the tappets to quieten the timing belt???? :bowrofl: :bowrofl: if only these had adjustable tappets and timing belts
And the balance chain runs infront of the timing chain, not behind.....
The timing cover can cause issues however only replace it if it needs replacing.
TEMP.....get a new thermostat as if the temp is dropping and rising at stand still then this is your issue. Simple fix but bit fiddly around the fuel rail.
Timing chain, if you want to use the eliminator kit you will have to also change your oil pump due to the second gen having a tensionor. You can get a new first gen pump and it bolts straight on. You can block the oil feed on the second gen one but in my opinion this is dodgy and I prefer not to do this.
FOr a second gen, around $750 including eliminator kit, brand new oil pump, oil, filter, coolant. I lift the motor out to do this as the shafts will not come out with the motor in. The oil pump has to come off to get the shafts out so gets checked anyway if not being replaced.
