Ok, I thought I would show off my new head unit, it is a poineer DEH-3850MP it has:
MP3/WMA playback,
CD-R/RW playback,
Selectable loudness,
4 by 50w output.
I bought it last saturday for $198 (and a free esky!!:roll: ) I have tested it thoroughly :badgrin: I managed to install it myself, Bain's "how to remove console" article was VERY helpful and so was the wiring diagram I found on here somwhere.
Any way, I'll stop rambling, here it is!

And another

I would also like to thank liberate for offering to help install my new head unit a while back but as it turns out it is pretty easy to do when you know which wires a which:redface:
I am very happy with it, it's nothing special compared to the many boot installs on here but it's my first succeseful attempt at installing anything serious on / in my car. Tell, me what you think of it.

looks good mate :D
i can see that its also missing the plastic surround? correct?

Cheers,
Yeah the surround is not attached, it wouldn't have fit as easily if that was put on, it would have ended up sticking out more or sinking in more, I dont mind the way it looks with out it though.
It is screwed in to where the ol H/U came out exactly, the holes lined up real nice so I didnt have to use the mounting bracket that came with it at all. I think it is more secure screwed in than the flimsy bracket.
My 5850 fits the same, it didn't take much to fill the side gaps, the uhf under the headunit filled the bottom gap, and pushed the unit up to fill the top gap- will post a pic if it helps.

Good to see you got in there and did it yourself, makes the end result alot more pleasing :)

That would be handy if you could put up a picture
What did you fill the gaps with?
The only problem now is that my drivers side tweeter doesnt work some reason:rant: , will have to look at that on boxing day, see if a wire has come loose or somthing.

It definately does make the result more pleasing, especially when it works properly lol

The 3850 is a good head unit and is well balanced with price and features/quality. I bought my 3850 last January, although mine is a DEH-3850MPH. The difference is mine is a Singapore model that I got a friend to buy over there as the 3850 wasn't available here when I bought it. The unit itself is identical, however the front facia is quite difference. Where yours is black and has and LED display the 'flavour' in Singapore and hence design of mine is silver with a clear display screen. When turned on there's a nice blue blacklight and LCD display. The Singapore model is only black and white display, however it is much easier to read during daytime, especially if the sun is shining directly on it.
I'm very happy with it, just note there are functions that people aren't aware of. For example, if you have some really good speakers in the back that can handle bass, you can set the back speakers as subwoofers. turn the unit off by pressing and holding the volume knob. Then press and hold it again when off for a few seconds and release. You get into the area where you set the time. Just cycle through the options with the function button and there's an option R/Spk (or something) and that can be set as full (normal) s/w (subwoofer) or off. Set that to subwoofer :D if your speakers can handle it. Then when the unit is on, the subwoofer setup button controls the back speakers and you can set the cutoff frequency for the back speakers with options from 50Hz to 125 Hz.

Cheers, will look at that when I am in there next. I said earlier in the thread my tweeter isnt working, it blew!, now i need to go buy a drivers side tweeter :cry: so in the next few days a trip to eddy wreck is in store. Also in daytime, the display is black and white and very easy to see. I have stock rears in, will they be able to handle the "sub woofer" setting?
Cheers

before i put the dvd player in my car, i just had a normal cd/mp3 player. I guess everyone knows how our lovely magnas make it difficult to put the plastic surround on our cd players, i just put a lil super glue on it and stuck it to the center console. Looked ok. you couldnt tell it wasnt attached to the stereo.

I found that with my Pioneer 6850, I had to drill new holes in the stock Magna headunit holder in order to get the surround lined up. My mate just guesstimated new holes probably 5-10mm in 'front' of the existing holes... and voila.
Gotta agree with you about the whole self-installation thing. Even though my 'install' is pretty sub-par, and a mate did a lot of it for me anyway.... it's certainly more fulfilling than simply chucking someone a few hundred $$$ to do it for you :D

It looks good how it is, I did mine like that and used some foam tape that stops drafts around it. if u use the braket the weight is on the pocket and it sags after a while.

Thanks. The sound quality is a heap better, it doesnt distort through the speakers as much when it gets to the same volume. I still havent tried out the mp3 capability, should do that soon.

I tried doing this only half reading the post :stoopid:, i didnt turn the H/U off :redface: I will try again, and maybe I can set the clock too lol
Thanks for all the comments guys, is feels great to have done something on my car and it is still working.

Ive had to do the same in my TF and TJ, although I filed the original screw holes on the Magna H/U bracket to move the H/U far enough forward so I could clip the plastic surround on, looks 110% better I reckon, worth the effort.

That confused the hell out of me when I first got my headunit too. I was wondering why pressing the button didn't do anything. The idea of having to turn my headunit off first just didn't make sense :P
And this is how my headunit surround fits. Pretty much a perfect fit on the bottom, the top is a mm or two off, but who cares :D

I tried turining my rears into sub's, it worked and I got to set the time too YAY :D

I am really happy with it. Mum had one in her VL Turbo a while a go and it really kicked ass and I remembered it for my H/U in my new car. The pioneer has a customisable setting for the eq and has a "powerful," "Extra Bass," "vocal," and a few other ones. I have spent a while setting up the eq so I am happy with the set up I have. I might set up an amp later on...

On the DEH-6850MP (which is a flip-face unit - probably why yours doesn't), when you turn the car off, the headunit makes a beep and the flip-face moves forwards so you can remove it. This is turned on by default, and is turned off by turning off the headunit and going to the options. It's a nice idea, but I personally don't have the need for it, so all it does is drive me crazy every time my headunit resets.

I see... That would be helpful if you are forgetful, it would remind you to take the face with it would drive me crazu too after a while, just like the beep when you leave the headlights on. Hopefuly your H/U doesnt reset that often hey ;)

Good choice on the HU dude. I got a 3550MP in my first car, i got the HU when it first came out which is a long time ago now. They have an awesome line up of features for a cheap hu, especially back when i first got mine. Ive always liked pioneer and a lot of my friends have either the same HU or similar ones (newer models etc) and im still impressed with the 3 series HU's. Looking to get one for my magna now.
In regards to the rear speakers and the subwoofer setting, on mine i have whats called FIE (Front Image Enhancer) which allows you to adjust the frequencies on the rear speakers, it only has a few settings or so but it gives you that extra bit of adjustment. Is this similar to what you have on ur HU? By using that subwoofer setting does the output on the HU change at all? Or does it just give you the adjustments on frequencies?

My HU has both the FIE and the sub option, but if the sub option is enabled the FIE canot be used. I can adjust the freq's with the FIE. I am not sure of the output change, I only found out about the sub abiility on this very thread :redface: The sub freq's can be adjusted just like adjusting the FIE if the sub wasnt enabled.
I have always loved Pioneer HU's too, they just seem to be good value for money, and their sound kicks bum too lol

Hey Franzie, do you remember what colour wires were what? I just want to know cause I'm about to install a Clarion headunit into my TJ :P
Franzie
15-01-2007, 11:08 AM
Not exactly, I have heard that there are adapter plugs that you buy that will plug into the mitsu plug then you wire up the other end to the HU. I found a wiring diagram on here somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it up for you. The only problem I found was that the speaker wires colours were different, the pair was colour coded but they werent the same as the diagram.
Edit, here you go: http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Mitsubishi-Wiring.pdf
Use the lower diagram, the acc and the main power corrsepond to the one in the diagram. The speakers will be 2 the same colour with a different coloured line but they dont correspond to that diagram:rant: eg. red with white and red with blue, I think will be the same side, pos and neg, I am not sue of the colours but on the loom, I will take a photo of the wiring I did and take note of the wires, hopefuly this can help :p
The easiest is to get an adapter plug, you can get them from autopro and probaably strathfields etc.

No worries, I am happy to help, god knows I could have used it :)
If that link doesnt help, I have compiled this to help others in need
"cues fanfare"
WIRING FOR A TJ AWD SPORTS STEREO
Wires from H/U -> Stereo colours
Purple -> Red with yellow
Purple with black -> Red with Grey
Green -> Green with Yellow
Green with black -> Blue with grey
Blue -> Power antenna wire, pink (attaching it this way will lead to the antenna being raised even with the cd player playing, there is another way but I havent found this out yet :()
Red -> Blue(from wiring diagram)
White -> White with blue
White with black -> Blue with black
Grey -> See note
Grey with black -> See note
Yellow -> Red with black(from wiring diagram)
Note; these 2 wires (white and white with black) I couldnt see clearly, so there should be 2 wires the same size, but different colours, they should correspond with these 2, I think they will be white with another colour and then black with the same colour, there is a small green one, do not use this for speakers it isnt a speaker wire, but I dont know what it is for.
The ones that have: (from wiring diagram) are taken straight from the diagram in the link in my above post, the rest came from my car, the colours might be different, but there are at least 2 cars wired with these colour combinations (my sisters wiring was identical)
Hopefully this helps you out, let us know how you get on.
EDIT: its a bit rambly, sorry

lol rambly is good. covers everything. tried installing my new deck today and i couldn't get the old one out! the screws were in so tight i couldn't turn them. tried everything. just left it for now and decided to install my bluetooth car kit instead, which works perfect!
did you have any problems turning the screws at all? if you did what did you do to get the bastards loose?

yeah i had the same problem with my screws..... i ended up just leaving the old HU in and installing my new one below. just take out the sleeve thing and screw it in there. i know its not the best look but at least your HU will be installed........:confused:

I had troubles with the screws in my sisters car, trying to get the old hu out of the bracket (It's a TJ too). When I installed hers (after I did mine of curse, not selfish at all :P), I just used a cordless drill, what I did was I started at the lowest tourque (sp?) range and worked my way through to the highest one ie, from 1 to 2 all the way to 6, then I gave it stick with the highest tourque range and it came off easy! The hardest thing with my install was the wiring and finding a dam spot for the earth wire.
@Guido, did the wiring match up with the diagram, or was the other stuff more useful? Where in SA are you?

If you look at bains removal guide to get out the assembly undo the hazard cable and the other cables. The whole piece should come out, then you will be able to get to the screws easily. The recirc bar only going half way would be annoying, but I have climate so I didnt have any trouble with that ;) :). You need to be very gentle with the drill otherwise the drill will spin too much and stuff up the head of the screw, not a good idea :D

ok. i went into repco today and got a magna to iso, and i had to order a clarion to iso from melbourne. so that will cut down on alot of the wire stripping i woulda had to do. will wait till that comes in and then give it another shot. also need to buy some new 6 inch speakers for the doors, cause the stock ones are 5W i believe!? and with my new head unit there could be some fireworks. is there anyway to just pop them out? or do i have to remove the entire inner door panel?

Well I finally did it! I got my Clarion head unit and speakers in. I also installed my Pioneer 350W 6 x 9's in the back (have no photo of those), I put my new Sony Xpload 270W 6" in the front 2 doors, and I installed the Clarion head deck along with my Nokia Bluetooth Carkit :D
Future plans are to install an amp, not sure if it will be powering some more 6 x 9's or a sub, and I also want to install an automatic aerial which will probably be done first.

Looking good mate, did those x-plod's just fit in the same spot without cutting or drilling?
How did the wiring go, was the wiring conversion iso easier than what I did?
The HU looks great, nice, neat and flush.
Nice job.:thumbsup:

Thx! :D No the x-plods didn't fit actually, they were smaller than the Eurovox speakers, easily fixed though, just drilled some new wholes in the plastic mount. No problems at all. The wiring was piss easy, just connected the two wiring harnesses I bought and that was it, hooked up the ground and it was all working, took me about 5 minutes. The hardest part was just getting the head unit in, one of the screws just did not want to budge! But after alot of cursing it came out eventually :bowrofl:

Yeah those wiring harnesses are definately worth the money you pay, save so much time, and alot of mess.
:dancin:
I did use the drill method, i was originally going to use that but I couldn't get my drill in there, so what I did is i disconnected the aircon unit and completely took off the front panel, that made it easier to get the drill in there.
So what other plans do you have for yours? Keep us all posted :P

Plans, for the car... hmm, I wont be doing anymore on audio for a while, the next thing is to put some different mags on it, but that will be a while off, I want to pay the rest of the car off first :)
Eventually I want to do a boot install with just 1 sub and some flashy bits like neons(probably red) etc. I also want to upgrade the front and rear speakers when they give up, probably with more pioneer gear, it all involves 2 things, money and time :)
