As most of ya know I've been looking at updating the 99 Altera I have. Today I spoke to Eastsise Mitsubishi (By phone so the sales dude doesn't know I'm blonde) about a VR wagon they have but he told me that only the LS and Altera models have the LPG modded engine.
What a pity I'll have to refine my search for the Luxury model.... It's no more than I deserve though if you ask me ;)

i noticed my intake manifold has a polished finish, where a lot of other models just have the plain grey, could that mean anything?

It has LPG stamped on the left hand side of the head to show it is a factory LPG compatable engine. LPG does not come standard (I thought I was the blonde here).

Some magnas came factory fitted with LPG, i think that was what he was referring to.
I thought the only difference between 3.5L engines (lpg and non lpg) were the stem seals. I was under the impression that both engines can run on lpg, it's just that the "lpg" version will keep the seals working longer.

Of course any engine can be tuned to use LPG .... but in my position wouldn't you be looking for a LPG "modded" engine if available in your car of choice?

No doubt you'd prefer it, but if the right "non-lpg" came along at the right price, i wouldn't pass it up :).

There were some small mods in the LPG "factory" models, stem seals being the only part of the motor.
I believe the ECU will also run a different ignition curve for the LPG as well as the LPG switch being factory fitted and the LPG guage is shared by the fuel guage, thus you will see what quantity you have depending on which you are running.
If you are after an LPG car, try and get one factory fitted, you are far better off than some after market fittment.

No what i meant was, being the only difference between engines is the valve seals, which would cost you ~$500 to replace, why not buy a "non-lpg" that's in good condition and at the right price, then when you get the conversion done get the lpg seals put in and presto :).

I've been quoted $3000 to $4000 as a trade in, I paid $12,000 18 months/100,000kms ago. I'll be sticking with the old girl for at least another year or two I think.
Another thing I've found out is if LPG is factory fitted the option code is NO1 and it should be up on the firewall.

I notice insurance web pages include "LPG compatible" option for the magna. I believe you could order LPG compatible heads to be installed on your vehicle, it cost more.. And maybe even the trip computer was an LPG aware version. (not that my factory LPG has a sensible system.
It doesn't tell me the distance travelled on LPG seperate to petrol. nothing is seperate, the only thing it can do smart is tell me the range for the current fuel in use. )
