Essentially because an auto is "Automatic", and a Manual is "Manual" (ie not automatic, therefore less moving parts and less complex design). I thought that would be all, but seriously, that seems a bit steep, unless everything (TCU, Gearbox etc etc) is screwed.

Sounds steep. Get a second price from another mechanic for a new gearbox and a reconditioned one. Also try Mitsubishi themselves for a brand new gearbox and fitment, then compare that fitment cost to what a few mechanics will fit a new gearbox from Mitsubishi for.

Good luck.

I just had my 5-speed tippy reconed for $2800 with 12 month warranty from my local transmission place. I'd be looking around if i was him , wouldn't go for a mitsi one as it only has 3 month warranty and you know nothing about what the box has done before you get it as it won't be a new one.:D

Those boxes are re-conditioned units- Pieces of s*** if you ask me. I chewed one out in less than 18 months, now after getting it rebuilt by a PROFFESIONAL gearbox establishment, it's 5000% better than the "RE-CONDITIONED" paperweight.

cost me $1400 to re-build and replace components in the 5 SP trippy
