View Full Version : TN Carby, is this normal?

So I bought a TN run around car.
Seems to have issues with the carby, and I just opened it up (just took the covers off) and sprayed carby cleaner everywhere.

I have no clue about carby's though and wondering if this is a problem:

There are 2 parts to the opening of the carby, one has a plate (like throttle body but not round) but the other half is open. Is this right or is it missing something?

Also, that plate did not open/close with the throttle (ie, I pulled the cable, engine revved up but that plate didn't open)
Then, as it warmed up a bit, it opened up and as I switched off the engine, it stayed open.

I haven't taken the car for a drive yet but will soon.

The car lacks power. It's only really good between 2000-3000rpm. I can't keep the speed limit up hills (80km/h) and it has no upper power at all and I am better off keeping it in a higher gear than revving it.
When I plant the throttle, it makes inuction sound but seems to just go slower than half throttle.

The car otherwise is in excellent condition. Starts everytime as soon as I turn the key (have to pump throttle before though)
And it cost me only $700 with 4 months rego, new tyres, brakes etc
I got quoted a carby overhaul for $250. It's not really worth it considering how cheap the car was but at the same time it is using a heap of fuel and might be cheaper in the long run

Though, if someone can guide me what to do I would much appreciate it. Once again I am used to my newer car which is all EFI and quite high tech so this carby stuff I am not familiar with.

Please help!

sounds like the secondaries are sticking. once uve cleaned it really good and find that it's still sticking , i'd replace it. 1st gen carbies are known to have problems with getting gummed up if not maintained or looked after properly.
sorry i can't give anymore info as ive never had a carby one myself but im sure buffy or o'l fart can come to the rescue for ya:D

Operation sounds like the automatic choke (richens it when cold).

If choke stays on after its warm then fuel consumption goes thru the roof.

I've no clue too to the exact nature of carby models and I gifted my TN workshop manual
to the fella that bought our 1-little-oldish-lady-owner-never-driven-to-church wagon
so can't lookup for you.

But it could pay to check the ignition side too.

Yank the plugs out to inspect, if they're sooty black you're running way rich.

New plugs & maybe new leads too could make a huge difference.

Dunno where ppl get the idea Cheap Car = cheap transport. :doubt:
Worst are the ones who think old cars don't need/deserve maintenance.
Karma will come when you're 80 and in a Nursing Home...

That's all good. The plate is the automatic choke. The fact that it opens when the engine warms up means that it is working.

I've just been through the same problems. If you have not already done so, replace the fuel filter. For carby models, it only costs about $6 to $9. (from Repco, Supercheap, KMart etc.) Type is Ryco Z-92. Mine was almost completely clogged, so replacing it gave an immediate improvement.

The secondary throttles are vacuum operated, so check the vacuum lines for leaks or perished rubber.

I do take care of it. I've only owned it for 1000km or so now but due for an oil change in 500km which I will do.
Also planning on chaning leads and plugs as every now and then it noticably runs on 3 cylinders (sound, power etc)

I'll change all the vacuum lines I guess as well, and do fuel filter

How much is another carby for this?
Like mentioned I am willing to look after it but not worth spenind much money on it. Just buying like $30 oil for it. Already got a ryco oil filter for it (friend bought the wrong one and gave me this one as it's the one for my model)

I took off the vacuum line that controls the opening to get hot air from extractors and that gave it a bit more power so I assume it is stuck on cold choke

How good of a clean does it need? I just took the plate off and sprayed carby cleaner into it, didn't brush anything at all
