View Full Version : 2nd Throat
How do you tell if the 2nd throat is operating?I've tried looking while someone else is blipping the throttle but would the butterfly open when the car is not under load? How do you unstick it if it's stuck?
This is a TP auto and man is it gutless up hills-only way to hold road speed is kick it back a gear.

I hope someone more knowledgeable will reply also. The secondaries are vacuum operated so they will probably not open unless under load. I am wrestling with the same problem. I'm not sure whether mine are working either but my lack of power is not as bad as you describe.
What I can say is that it shouldn't be gutless on hills. I bought a TM auto (carby) new in 1987 and it always had plenty of power on hills. Not enough to keep up with V8s of course but most small cars would be left far behind on long steep hills.
If you haven't already done so, replace the fuel filter (Ryco Z-92). It only costs $6 to $9 and can make a difference if it is partially clogged.
Also check for vacuum leaks or disconnected vacuum hoses.

Get her idling with the air cleaner off and give it 1 good wide open throttle rev while looking down the carb.
I dont mean rev the snot out of it for ages , just go straight to wide open throttle and let her go to about 4500, the secondary should open before it gets there. Just one quick rev. :D

its vacuum secondaries so pull the vacuum line off the vacuum secondaries and suck on it if it holds suction it is fine but more often than not the diaphragm fails after a while and wont hold suction. renew the vacuum secondaries if this is the case.
