My Car is, a 93' TR Exec. 2.6L Manual.

1. whisp, whisp, whisp, whisp...

That's all I hear on start up when the clutch is not in. As soon as I remove it you can hear it. (Mind you the ticking of the engine is alot louder than this)

It's not loud, but noticeable if the ambiance is quiet. I remember reading a 3rd gen thread about something similar a little while ago, just wondering if it's anything to worry about?

2. The "tapping" or "ticking" of the engine is still occuring, if not worse now. Oil is good, it got a good clean out not too long ago. Timing chain maybe? or something else?

It tends to stop once the car has reached mid temp (normal temp), possible lubrication issues?

3. My Suspension (I believe) is shot. The car is very bouncy, if I apply some pressure at the back on/off/on/off the front reacts very badly as well notably the bac. How much would new suspension set me back?

4. The car now seems to be struggling a tad in second gear, when sitting just below 40k's you can feel power loss, until I gear into third? Engine perhaps?

5. Is a rebuild worth it? I'm planning on keeping the car for at least another year.

6. Anyone got any tips on brake pad changing?

Some might say? "just take it to a mechanic", however I only really want a rebuild or service done by a mechanic, brake replacement can be done myself, and some of the above may be DIY as well.

It's overdue for a service, but I want a few things sorted first before I pay for labour.

1. Sounds like your throw out bearing is worn mate.

2. Lifter noise. Lash adjusters are worn, or blocked/gummed up. You can try cleaning them out with some diesel before you go replacing them. OR oil grade too viscous.

4. Does it only happen in 2nd, or any other gears? Ignition timing might be a good start here.

5. No, unless you travel alot of kms or can get the work done cheap. If you plan on selling the car the price of the rebuild will probably outweight the sale value anyway.

6. Buy a slab and i'll change em for ya :P lol

Bouncy suspension is caused by dampers not springs. Harder springs will hide the issue but not resolve it.

The pads, if you are going to do this, get your rotors machined if there is enough left on them or replaced if not....brakes are something you do not get a second chance with.

The tapping, poss lash adjusters, not likely chain as this is more of a rattle.

I am unclear as to when you have the "whisp" noise as your first statement contradicts itself. Do you get it clutch in or clutch out? If clutch out is noisy and clutch in is quiet, it is your gearbox. If oppersite it can be your clutch plate not releasing correctly or your throw out bearing.

Ops didnt read the question propperly. lol

Hey Mal, do 2nd gens have a spigot bearing or bush? That could also be a possibility too.

To tie in with Mal's answer and your Q4. it sounds like you may have gearbox problems.

Regaring suspension, you can pick up used bits from the wreckers for ~$50, should get you out of trouble.

The rest, no idea sorry.

$550! Jesus..

I'm trying to decide whether to go all out and completely do up the magna.

Kit, spray, possibly new engine. new interior, rims all of that.

Or purchase a TF/TH and do that up with little cash..

A lot better than Pedders.....

Kings will cost you are around the $130.00 per end, use the third gen rears as they are a little harder and being a FWD they benefit from it.

The dampers, rears are cheaper, you can go KYB or Monroe. Personally I think the KYB are a little overgassed which will give you good dampering on the down stroke but they tent to rebound a little fast.

No the FWD's do not have a spiggot bearing as they do not need them. The reason RWD have them is because of the length of the input shaft and it needs support.
