Thought Id post and see if I can get an answer, basically the Mrs' KR makes a whirring noise when running, its loud enough to hear from up the street, I took it to a mechanic once and he suggested possibly the power steering pump, which I since replaced and didnt solve the problem.

Car runs fine however, and I also had the same noise on another KR I proviously owned.

Could it possibly be the water pump? I can get one on ebay for ~$5 used, so was thinking might be worth a shot since it wont cost me much.

Any help? Id post a sound clip but Im not at home.

Does it make the noise at idle or only when moving?

Tip, its gonna be 4 hours of hard work before you get to that water pump, and another 4 to get everything on.
IF it is the water pump. Buy a new one.
You can ask Slyts6 about his water pump rebiulding.
Has had to do it 3 times before he got a new one

4 hours? I think thats if you have no mechanical experience.

Well AROUND 4 hours...
Cause when i did mine an engine mount was out so the engine was down a bit more...made it easier to put the water pump back on.
Putting everything back on well for a backyarder 4 hours is accurate...timing belt...covers...pulleys...etc etc

Take off the A/C belt and see what happens.Mine had a noise that was the ac clutch bearing.

Remove both of your belts (air and alt) and see if the noise is still there.

It may be the idler pully for the timing belt, if it was your water pump the noise is usually more a grinding noise.

I would say 4 hours for a back yarder would be fair, only a back yarder shoudl not do this as there is a timing belt involved and one mistake can be costly.

Just do the belts one at a time.

To get the rear belot off you have to take off the front one so why not take both off? Neither runs the water pump so there is no risk of damage.

Mine has quite a whine at highish revs (3.5K+) at the moment, brand-new belts, reckon this will go away as they wear in, or do they need adjusting? (mechanic installed).

It actually sounds kinda cool, like it's supercharged or something :D

If this is with the air con on only, he has over tightened your aircon belt and this will damage the compressor clutch bearing

No this happens from the moment the key is turned, as revs go up or down so does the noise.

But it is definitely noticeable, not just a little whirring either. Happened since we got the car, I have since replaced P/S pump and the 2 belts that are easily accessible.

Should whip out the Camcorder soon I suppose.
