View Full Version : How good are Jaycar/Response Amps?

I've seen a few posts in the audio section that suggest Jaycar/Response Amps.
Just wondering how they compare to other brands (some more expensive - but maybe better quality?), like Kicker, Alpine, Soundstream, etc.
I usually go by the 'you get what you pay for' - but is this as relevant with amps?
eg.
If two mates with identical setups bought a Jaycar and an Alpine Amp.
What would the Alpine buyer say?
1. Like wow, that was worth the extra cash! This Alpine amp rocks and was worth the double price tag. :D
2. Hmmm, not that much of a difference. But at least I've got a better quality amp. I hope.
3. Man, I got ripped off, yours sounds just as good. :doubt: But I have an Alpine sticker on my window :P

theres nothing wrong with response/jay car amps
they are well worth there money
if you buy a better brand amp then the amp would have better components in it which will make it have a longer life span and less problems in the future
but hey as long as it comes with a warranty you got nothing to worry about
people buy the good branded stuff mainly for competition or if people just like their gear
i've got alpine, eclipse and rockford gear in my car
but if you can get this stuff cheap then go for it
there are alot of cheapy brands out their or imitations on the quality brands so you just have to be careful
keep em outta the sun/heat or they will quickly die in an australian summer :)
next week im taking back 2 amps for some mates, a 4x80 and a 2x150

Agreed.
In the low-mid price range, most people prob wouldn't hear much of a difference - if any at all - but there will be a huge difference in the components used in the amp, it's true power handeling and how it copes in heat etc.
Although i havn't ever heard or used them, i do hear great things about jaycar stuff.

Yeah, I hear good things about Jaycar on forums like this.
Ballarat just got a Jaycar shop - popped in but it just looked like a Tandy or Dick Smith so was not impressed with shop looks.

I think it depends on the quality of the rest of your installation, and how good your ears are. If it's a budget install, you won't buy better. Or basically, what Righty said.
If it helps, I'm currently making a similar decision. I've got a Respnse amplifier for my speakers. I'm tossing up whether or not to keep it, or buy an Alpine amp. I've also got to buy an amp and a sub - yet again, Response or Alpine. I've been thinking about it for the last month and I'm still not sure what I want to do yet :D The Alpine would sound better, but I'd be pissed off if I spent $450 upgrading my speaker amp to notice crap-all difference in the sound.

Not worth it in lower Grades.
If anyone has heard my system or MGNTZD's you will confidently say for the money they are awesome amp's
Ive heard the JBL's are good.
Also the alpines....But for the money Jaycar cant be beat.
Specially the 4x100 For the $220ish odd its a great buy.
Specially for cheapasses like me who wanted maximum W per $

can vouch for mgntzd's setup, sounds sweet. although he has had some probs with having them replaced and a fault recently we have put down to battery power supply,
i asked about this not long ago have a search for my post!
good value for money, but from what i heard, there have been some dodgy experiences with amp failure. oh and dont get a full jaycar system, my mtx 45 series pumps more than 2 jaycar 12" subs. plus the sq isnt as impressive as i would have expected.

Also keep in mind "beuty is in the eye of the beholder" same concept applies for car audio. You can have one set up, and someone will be completley happy with it and thinks it sounds awesome, where as another person will think it sounds awful. It really depends what you're used to and what you expect.

there is nothing wrong with responce precision amps, i have 1 myself, unless you are wanting go for compitition sound and reliability (and price). otherwise go for the responce, true they do get hot cuz of lack of fan, but i drilled a 15CM hole in the rear pannel of the amp and put in a fan (from jaycar) and it runns cool now. and you get good sound at good price.

My mate has 2 of the 1500 watt monoblocks and 8 8" venom subs and the car pulls 145.3db and more to come, but good amps.

Ive got two 2x150 Precision amps. One bridged @ 500W for the sub and the other running my Morel front stage.
Never had any problems and yeah they get a bit warm on a hot day, but never failed at all.
Value for money I think they are one of the best buys you can get.
