Hello everyone,
I think i should introduce myself, My name is Andy and i live in modbury in South Australia. I drive a TR magna elite, which i got from my parents for nothing but the engine was in some trouble.
My Girlfriend had just brought a TN magna with a half decent engine but crappy body. So i came up with a plan an evil, evil plan. After much research (mainly on this site) i worked out that i would swap the engines.
I bore you with details but it took about 2 weeks working on it every now and again and it was intresting but it is done now and the TR is driveable and i am now going to rebuild the other engine.
from Andy.
p.s. if you want to know anything else about what i did just leave me a message

Hi Mate,
Welcome to the club.
Good work on the conversion, however the 2.6 in the 1st Gens is ghey and you would have one crappy (performance wise) frankenstein car there. The TR is heavier than the TN, then you put a less powerful donk in there wouldnt be anything to write home about.
But I guess a TR with a decent running crap version of the 2.6 would be better than a **** running decent-er? version of the 2.6.
Not a personal attack, I commend you for the engineering feat you have accomplished, just IMHO kinda a catch 22 situation engine wise.
Hope it all goes well for you though, hate to do all that work and run into problems.
Keep up the good work anyways mate.
Luke

Hey dude....a running frankenstein beats a dead duck any day.:D
Welcome to the site. Theres plenty of info on rebuilding the tr engine on here so you can do that at ya lesuire while ya get around in the beasty.....we're all here to help.:D

I thought they were the same engine...

efi ones are very similar but have minor differences.:)

Im guessing it would be things like the head and such...
Ill leave that researh to another day:)

Yeah....roller rockers, bigger injectors, knock sensor, better chain system etc:)

Not to mention about 10% more powerful. I really don't see the point, unless your going to put the other engine back in once you've rebuilt it...orrrrr put in in the TN, that would be a bit interesting, would certainly have some go to it.

Plenum in TR is different to TN aswell.

I also thought you couldn't put an older engine into a newer car?
But anyway congrats on the conversion!

Both 4G54 engines, maybe a loophole?

Why not just buy yourself a new second gen... it would work out around the same cost, and you don't have to drive an underpowered car running an engine that is older than the car chassis.

Everyone rants about the power, most of the power gain came from the injection and manifolds, which would have to have been changed!
So the second gen has the heart shaped cut out on the piston, roller rockers, different profile cam etc etc,.....,he did say it was temp until he rebuilds the other motor.
I say good on you mate, is obvious that this is the first time you have attempted something and to work out exactly what to change etc is well done if you are not familiar with cars, especially Magna's.

I replaced the head on a TR EFI with a TP head, just changed the cam and rockers and it worked perfect, mind you it didn't seem to go as well.

Thanks for welcoming me to the club, everyone.
The swap is just temp till i can rebuild the other engine to go back in, i just thought that i would be better to have a running car. There may be a power loss but compared to the old engine i actually have a gain in power lol and also i don't really care about power with petrol these day i would rather have a decent runner and keep the power for my next project.
The things i swaped on the two engines to make them work were: all the engine mounts (some might have been nearly the same but i didn't want to head ache of working that out when trying to line up the engine), the intake manifold as the TN's is totally different (Plenum is different), gearbox and t/converter and the little plat that the t/c bolts on to the TN has three bolt holes and the TR has four. also the TR has a knock sensor but the TN does not even have a hole for it so i have just hooked it up seems to work ok, (does anyone know how to by pass it?)

Thats what I said...:P ..to you guys.....lol
The knock sensor os a piezo electric device, in that it gives out a voltage if squeezed or vibrated.
If it is vibrated (by the engine knocking) it sends that voltage to the ECU which retards the timing slightly to overcom the problem.
I'm not sure how you would bypass it but if you retarded the timing a degree or 2 it might negate the need for the sensor input. This would also lower your power a little.
Anybody else got any ideas??? Maybe just bolt the sensor to the block somehow??:)

What's the difference in the chain system:D
thanks in advance

the TR TS has a little ratchet jigger on the oil pump plunger that stops it relaxing when the oil pressure drops at engine shut down.

The timing chain has a ratchet tensioner but as the timing chain was rarely a problem this means 3/5th of bugger all.
The balance chain has a hydraulic tensioner, these still cause problems so same as above.

Given that in 1992 there was an awd, quad cam with traction control, abs etc saloon Diamante available to everywhere except Australia. Not to mention why did mits take so long to bring the Evo here when the WRX would ahve been stomped by it?

Is the TR injected?
How did you get around the knock sensor?

It is :)
The problem is I cant seem to get my TN to run cheaply on unleaded, have to run premium. Apart from that a TR engine in a TN is a worthwhile upgrade.
For everyone, the main differences are the roller rockers, better EFI and higher compression with the TR
