What the hell, when I got up to like 100kph last night I noticed whistling coming from the mirrors, I put my hand between the gap of the A-Pillar and the mirror and it stopped. Took it out and it starts putting out a tune again. Why couldn't mitsubishi just make they're mirrors like everyone else, No body makes they're mirrors come off the door panel!!!!

:bowrofl: @ Ol' Fart's sig

As for the mirrors... maybe just use masking tape to seal any seams (i.e. where the mirror connects to the door, etc), then see if the whistling persists... if not then use a silicone sealant or something to close up the seams..

happy new yearzzz

The 3rd gen maggie mirrors were designed as a flag shape and positioned back from the windscreen to aid aerodynamics, allowing the air to pass between the a-pillar and mirror instead of only over the mirror itself, thus reducing drag.

This contributed to the 0.28 drag co-efficient which was extremely low for a family car at the time (best of any Australian built car). I can only recall the Lexus LS400 as another sedan matching it at that time.

I don't get any whistling from mine at that speed so your mirror might not be sealed properly.

if the mods read this we'll all be banned for spam i reckon :gtfo:

and as for a 0.28 drag co-efficent  where the hell do you find a stat like that

Yes, from memory, one of the first brouchers stated that it was wind tunnel proven to be
0.28 which is sports car dynamics. And as for the mirrors, lots of manufacturers are using
them now, especially in the awd/4wd vehicles, the new holden, some korean ones. Alos,
Porsche was and is still using those style of mirrors.

yeah the magna is where you see alot of design 1st's

the mirrors are becoming common now, nextdoor has a Jazz and the mirrors look like they are mitsus leftovers, the 400k bentley GTC has my doorhandles ;) scooby do copied the window surrounding but used 2nd gen doorhandles :bowrofl: and rember when the 3rd gen came out? looked like no other, and got a flaming..... then the others (fraud & hold on) holden esp pinchesd some tips on how to style a car from the mitsu lol

It is more than likely the triangular piece, (not sure what its called), but the front run channel on the corner of the door. I recall there had been a lot of complaints about wind noise and it turned out to be this part. At the factory there was a jig made up that the QA guys had, and when the parts came in from Japan they where put in this jig and bent in a couple of millimeters. This was used from TJ onwards hence why some owners of earlier 3rd gens complain of wind noise around the A pillar.

The Mitsubishi Magna TE brochure I have. It says and I quote:

"Now lets consider some of the engineering excellence featured in the new Magna. To begin with, innovative thinking in body styling not only means Magna's advanced aerodynamics significantly reduce wind noise allowing Magna to 'slip' through the air more easily, but it greatly improves fuel economy too. In technical terms, Magna has a drag coefficient of only 0.28. Better than any other Australian made car.

In practical terms, the array of high-tech noise reduction techniques, including unique 'flag type' side door mirrors, thicker side windows and sporty sashless door design with one continuous flush seal against outside noise and dust, all serve to enhance Magna's legendary quietness."

Then we all put exhausts and loud sound systems on and stuff up that theory...

I just ran a bead of glue "with the glue gun" in the small gap on the top of the mirror. Stoped the whistle with mine

A mitsu mechanic warned me about this and showed me the exact spot that the whistle comes from. All he did was put a tiny bit of tape where the whistle originates and its gone. I dont know if this is the same whistle but its from the mirror surround. I will get around to taking a pic to point out the spot.

Sell your 3rd gen and get a second gen. At least they don't whistle till 170.

I can garauntee that at 170 there will be a lot more noises too, not as annoying to hear like whistling, but more "oh god" type noises.
