airbag+steering wheel=
i went through hell with mine coz the leather on it was all worn and the stitching was fraying. the dealer tried to get it fixed but NOONE would touch it. ended up getting a $15 cover. it sucks. good luck trying to find a solution and let me know if you do.

Well can you get the normal steering wheel that is on the car covered in leather then or is that just impossible.... some sort of custom trim job

MAGWGN
08-01-2004, 01:11 PM
no that was my problem. they all said they wouldnt try it with the wheel on and you cant take them off with the airbag. if you want it that much, set your airbag off, claim it on insurance and get it done then. i know thats a stupid idea but i cant see many other options. sorry

Hrmm... I drove a sports AWD with a leather wheel - 6 hours on the road, and they are *Very* uncomfortable - the stitching is all spikey. I always liked the look of them, but after using one - I prefer the standard exec wheel. Just IMHO.

i had my steering wheel (standard tj steering wheel with airbag) leather bound exact same way as the vrx one is. Easy job for the leather trimmers and had no issues as yet with it. Costs about 100-200 dollars to get done

Magna23

No way!

Leather VR-X wheel is $550.00 plus fitting.

I was told by mitsu that the original airbag and the grey/black centre part that covers the airbag can be reused from your existing wheel provided of course that they aren't damaged when being removed!

When i can afford it i'm going to get the one like in my avatar.

Thanks.

So why can you not remove an airbag steering wheel? Ever heard of de activating the air bag system first??

MAGWGN

hey i dunno! there was no way i was gonna touch it and everyone they tried said they wouldnt touch it! if it can be done id be more than happy to do it. i thought touching it was illegal unless it had been set off??

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal if a dealer does it. Maybe you could take it to a dealer and get them to take it off. Then leave the car there for a couple of days while a body trimmer retrims the wheel in leather, then just take it back to the dealer so they can refit it. Then it's all perfectly legal 8)

maybe we should hit a mitsubishi dealer over the head with a spanner and steal thier cars and sell leather steering wheels on the black market for a pretty penny.

I know im diggin up posts again but if any of you want to retrim your steering wheel. Offer to disable and remove the airbag yourself by these instructions from Gregory: [56k Warning BTW]

i'm looking at possibly getting mine fitted next month along with after-market mitsu cruise control at the same time, provided that it'll hook-up and work ok with the cruise control switchess on the right hand-side of the wheel itself as pictured in my avatar.

If my favourite dealer will attempt it for me i'll let you all know the final cost/outcome!

You can remove it, deactivating it first using the instructions provided in this thread by another member, you just can't replace it with a non air-bag wheel as this is illegal I believe?

If the car came out of the factory with a drivers side air-bag you can fit to it only other wheels that have an air-bag apparently - or so i've heard.

u could probably get away with it but if the police see you, you got a nice yellow sticker on your car :( ....and the SRS light is always on....and probably voids your warranty (btw i base this on nothing  )

No point complaining about the price; airbags cost so much for a reason. There is a hell of a lot of R&D that goes into them and the manufacturing standards are skyhigh to ensure that not ONE airbag comes out of the factory that will not fire when activated. There are numerous units which are thrown out during testing on the production line.

exactly...it's like asking, just how much ones life is worth? ... well that's how much you'd be wishng you'd have paid when you have an accident in a car without one!

strange how that doesn't look so different from the one i'm getting except for the centre plate portion which has the momo badge where the one i've been looking at will have the existing mitsu branded air-bag cover. :)

You don't by chance have a price or model/part number for that momo wheel do you? (not the nissan branded one of course, but a similar generic one?)

lucky for some. :-)

I'm pretty certain that the one I've been looking at is a momo item manufactured especially for mitsu anyway, problem is that the mitsu dealers are charging an arm and a leg for em!

Correction, I was just quoted $400.00 for the wheel plus $80.00 fitting, thats about $270.00 cheaper than my previous best quote, assuming that both dealers charge the same ammount of labour for fitting!!!

does that wheel have an airbag

akko
30-01-2004, 02:00 PM
Sure does, mitsubishi wouldn't be allowed to sell it for the Magna range otherwise.

It's illegal to replace a steering wheel that has an air-bag with one that does not from memory.

is that the new vrx one ??

and did they just use your current airbag or do you get a new airbag unit as well ?

akko
03-02-2004, 02:02 PM
According to the mitsubishi product description it is the new VR-X wheel, but they where available as an accessory for the TJ series from some time last year.

Yes, my understanding is that they reuse your existing air-bag and air-bag cover/plate

Madmagna

In a car fitted without an airbag i wonder what is involved in removing the air bag unit from the cover once it is disarmed?

akko
04-02-2004, 03:11 PM
All fitted, pics to come... ended up costing about $40.00 more than expected because my magna needed a wheel alignment too apparently.

Madmagna
06-02-2004, 03:29 PM
How much was the wheel?

akko
06-02-2004, 03:31 PM
$400.00 for the wheel
$80.00 fitting
$40.00 wheel alignment

Madmagna
06-02-2004, 03:34 PM
I think it is time to see if the TJ spline is the same as the KR one, the bag is not too hard to remove apparently from the horn cover.

Not yet but I will be taking some on the weekend.

Yup, my local mitsu dealer supplied and fitted it, the Part Number for the "VR-X style leather steering wheel assembly (silver)" is: Part Number# MR923785

Hope that helps!
