Trying to work out the the tiptronic transmissions in the 3rd gens have an oil cooler or not.

Also, does the 2nd Gen have a oil cooler on their auto transmissions in either V6 or 4 cylinder ?

If so, would the one from a 2nd Gen fit a 3rd Gen ?

No cooler on any 3rd gens.

2nd Gens all have coolers on the Autos.

Yes they will fit a 3rd gen, just turn em around, fit them to opposite side of the car than the 2nd Gens, and youre golden. Little bit of cutting and clamping of hoses etc, but nothing major.

Ive been meaning to take some pics of mine, I will get around to it very soon.

A 2nd Gen Cooler mounts perfectly in front of the radiator, as the bolt holes on the cooler line up perfectly with threaded holes in the subframe.

Highly recommended mod.

3rd gens have it as part of the main radiator.

3rd gens have it as part of the main radiator.

If that is the case will you get any better performance out of you auto trans if you put in a seperate cooler?

Interesting point about them being a part of the main radiator.

So i wonder if adding an additional cooler is a worthy mod ?

How much do the 2nd Gen ones go for at a wrecker ?

Yeah this has been covered before - you'll find more comments if you do a search.

As for having a seperate cooler - some members believe its a good idea and to be honest providing the job is done properly, it will allow the AT oil to be cooled a lot better than the current in radiator setup the 3rd gens currently have. In fact, the third gen radiator probably lets the at oil get a little too hot imho.

Wow since this mod is so cheap I might look into getting it done, anyone able to guess the cost in getting it installed?

Not worth paying a mechanic.

Its a matter of bolting the cooler on, running 2 hoses and clamping them.

Ill do it for you if you come to newcastle.

Just had a quick look and it would be easy. Just disconnect the rubber hose (it's about 100mm long) that joins the 2 small steel pipes at the bottom drivers side of the radiator (1 from transmission and 1 from radiator) and connect the cooler to each of the steel pipes.
Make sure you check the oil level in gearbox and top up as per specs (manufacturers handbook) after fitment, as the cooler will take some of the oil from the gearbox.

This is only a guide and if you don't feel confident in attempting this then don't.
