I have a 1996 four cylinder Mitsubishi Magna Executive sedan that I have four years. The car has 185,000km on the clock. The car has not missed a beat in the time that I have had it. Three weeks ago I took it to a new mechanic (not happy with the work the old mechanic did on my other car) recommended by a friend. As part of a full service the new mechanic did on the car he replaced all belts, including the power steering/air-conditioning belt that he said had never been replaced. Within 24 hours the best came off with severe shredding on both sides of the belt. I took the car back and had the belt replaced again. Again within 48 hours the belt was off with the same problem. I again took the car back and the mechanic explained that the newer belt was a lot softer than the old one and that there was movement in the power steering pump that was causing the problem. I had the pump replaced with one with less movement but 3 weeks later the belt is off again with severe shredding along one side. The mechanic says this is a known problem with these Magnas and he does not know what to do other than to keep replacing the belts.

Any suggestions? Is this a known problem? Unfortunately I am not mechanically minded so technical feedback might go right over my head.

Is your car a TS, or a TE model?

I had a bad incident with the same belt on a V6 and the mechanic suggested it was possibly due to the bearing in the idler wheel (adjustment pulley) as he's seen those go bad after new belts were fitted. So yeah maybe try and fit a new idler pulley...

The answer to VrWagon's question is that the Magna is a TE not a TS.
