hey guys n gals,
just wondering who on here has picked up the Hopper Stopper package that TZABOY installed. I heard that a few have been picked up since they developed them, so I'm looking for any comments on how good they are, any problems, etc...
cheers,

So am I correct in assuming the only set they have sold to an active AMC member was to TZABOY??
Admittedly - it's hard to justify $1,700 on a front brake upgrade, when you can buy so many other things for that much money.
I'm still tossing up what my brake upgrade will involve - I'm not convinced Ralliart fronts will pull me up quick enough. But for that much money I could get a new exhaust in 3" and a retune with a electronic boost controller - which should net me about 20 more hp.
And then my brakes would really be inadequate  .

not sure about the members, but the guy from Hoppers said they've sold several kits. I kind of thought there might be a couple of members with them.

yeah, my thoughts exactly. there's so much more you could do to make your car faster or handle better with $1700, but I always like being able to stop in time. I don't trust my stock brakes now, much less with another 70 - 80 kw and 100+Nm.

Well personally I am happy with my upgrade to ralliart calipers + EBC greenstuff/RDA rotors on my TJ sports. I've pulled up from ~130km/h a few times in quick sucession without any dramas, yes they do fade a little, but after a few big stops in a row, they still have plenty of bite left. In fact, at those kind of speeds I still find it easy to trigger the ABS and have the car squirm alot. I've also done several trips to the electronic speed limiter (indicated ~220km/hr, gearing/rpm backs this up) and, and pulling up from those still felt confident. This was all done on a private road of course.
IMO the $1700 is better spent elsewhere, but sadly I havn't had a chance to hit wakefield yet, which will be the ultimate test. If you are serious about monster brakes, in that pricerange you can get second hand brembos anyway.

i can justify the cost after using them. They work really well until you've hit them hard the 3rd time and then they work fantastic. My car will be at wakefield park this year so i didnt want to compromise laps times and the car safety. my standard ralliart package was good but to compare the two setups is like comparing chalk and cheese. and finally they look awesome

He makes a good point...........
That in itself is probably worth about a grand in my book. Hell - look how much most of us have spend on wheels that have little to no benefit other than looking good.

I thought big rims add horsepower?! :noway:

Fair enough, Personally I couldn't justify spending $1700 on front brakes, as that would have meant skimping on something else essential in the car. Down the track if i decide to throw more money at it, I will definatly be considering this, or something similar.
Also I understand when you have 20" rims your brakes begin to look rather piddly :) That is one of several reasons why i opted to go for 17"s, the ralliart brakes fill them nicely.

One of my mates has a supercharged VP SS with 300rwkw and the only brake mods he's done is slotted front rotors (same size as stock, probably smaller than standard magna brakes) and Bendix pads. His brakes fade after 3 applications from any sort of high speed.

I cant understand how they can improve stopping... wouldn't drilled & slotted stock discs, with ebc pads, and braided lines, do just as good a job as any other brake package?
I mean, essentially the only thing you can improve is brake fade and pedal feel, the stock units will lock up(trig abs) the wheels fine, any more bite and they will just lock up
(trig abs) will less pedal effort...
braided lines and a booster reinforcing bracket will improve feel reducing spongyness @ higher temps, while the drilled and slotted rotors will let the pads breathe better and bite better, reducing fade.
the use of a race compound pad will also reduce fade.
one of the other things you could do is change your brake fluid more often, as brake fluid is highly hydroscopic meaning it absorbs stupid amounts of water from the atmosphere, which at higher braking temperatures boil, and cause spongy water vapour pockets in the lines.
I can't see any reason you couldn't get a very similar result for under $1000.
Well, thats my 2 cents criticise away!!! :D

sure abs will kick in before a wheel locks. thing is these puppies are so powerful that instead of the thump thump when u hit the pedal hard, the wheels actually start locking up and get screach screach instead.
going from a 2 pot caliper to another 2 pot caliper may seem silly, but the piston size is so much bigger, i never took a comparison picture of the two calipers side by side.
horses for courses mate. i wanted big brakes that worked a dream and get the looks. i achieved both and i was willing to part with the cash.

Interesting Jase, that's how exactly how I would describe going from my stock brakes to the ralliart caliper + RDA slotted and EBC GReenstuff and Motul DOT 5.1..there's enough braking power to make the ABS screech rather than thump, even at high speeds.
Out of curiousuty, what pads/rotors/fluid were you using? I know a TJ sports would probably weigh ~50-70kg less than a ralliart because of the lack of bodykit and equipment, but I would have thought that would make a neglible difference to braking.
EDIT: Maybe it's because I have smaller rims with narrower tyres than you? I run 235/45/R17.
EDIT2: Just checked your profile, you are actually running marginally narrower tyres *shrug*

actually, your tyres are 10mm wider that Jason's 225/35R20s.

Thats right, but try repeated heavy stops with the stock brakes and they soon won't be able to reach the ABS point.
As you said your self you want to improve fade (or rather reduce it). And to do that effectively you need to increase the cooling efficiency of your braking system. And the best way to do that is to increase the surface area the disks and pads have.
