just wondering if removing the front muffler is a good/bad idea and if its legal?

I was looking to get a catback system but found out the main piping for the 3.0L is 2.4"? i think, so theres not much point going to a 2.5" with a catback? (2.5" pipiing is the average for a catback isn't it?) so now my plans are to remove the front muffler and get a straight through rear muffler and keep original pipiing. does that sound alright? or am i way off

It's gonna be loud and drone like a mofo, but if you don't mind that then go for it :). I don't think it's illegal to remove one of the mufflers as long as the output of the exhaust isn't over the loudness requirements, which you'd be pushing with a straight through rear muffler.

hmm i might try it it shouldnt cost too much and if it drones i guess i could put a hotdog there instead?

me thinks that the TE through to TJ and maybe up came stock with 2 1/4 inch piping, and what M4DDOG sed it will drone like a MOFO i have all stock piping untill it hits the twin exhaust and splits to 2 inch and even a 2000 rpm's it drones a little, but a good sound system will stop the droning :D

will a hotdog stop the droning and would i put the hotdog in place of the front muffler?

technically I think you'll find its a resonator - a thick piece of wider pipe designed to catch resonations or 'droning'. If it is such then it doesn't have a baffle, so there'd be no gain to flow by removing it - I'd say leave it there.

my 3L TE has not had a front muffler/whatever since i've own'd it,
i've since gone twins on the back and now has a little drone, but it's not to bad cos of the man allowing control of revs.

before i got the twins fitted there was no drone (not sure what system was in place as someone else had it fitted, but it did have a redback on the back)

give it a try and see if you like it

Standard piping on the V6 3rd Gens is some weird size just undwer 2 1/2 inch so there is no need to replace the piping from my experience.

As far as removing the front muffler, leave it, it makes the car sound rawe and tinny, like a Honda Civic with a high pitch exhaust.

Makes no performance difference.

Just wack a cannon on the back and they sound great.

I use to have a 3.0l TE auto and I put a 2.25 inch system in with a hotdog and a rear muffler (can't remember brand) and she droned a fair bit, but still sounded nice when accrelerating and at idle.

My current 3.5l TJ manual sports has a 2.5 inch system with a hotdog and a ASX muffler and pacemaker extarctors and at idle it rumbles like a V8 and I've had dozens of people that work with V8's say the same, but it doesn't drone one bit.
Before the extractors were fitted it still didn't drone and sounded very nice the extractors just deepened the note after fitment.

Both systems were custom done by Dan at Toronto Exhaust.

Had our front muffler replaced with a hotdog under warranty...drone is annoying...

hmm might just leave it then, sounding tinny is the last thing i want it to do. what are some examples of straight through mufflers? what about lukey lr2779 if anyone has it?

I've only got the hotdog and the cat converter on my car, sounded nice with out the muffler, just a bit hollow, it's loud but not intrusive loud. Now I've got extractors on it and the noise is betterd ten fold and it's not as loud either, it's got a deep note up to 2500rpm then it starts to scream all the way to limiter.

The pipe size on the 6G74 is 60 mm (2.36 inches). I replaced the main/rear muffler with a
2 1/2", 18" long Magnaflow and the middle resonator with an 2 1/2, 8" Magnaflow. It noticably improved performance, but is is "dronny". I have not changed the front resonator (yet).
Car turns 70.3 MPH, 10.1 seconds, ET in a 1/8 mile dragstrip.

so would getting rid of the front muffler make the car sound more tinny with or without an aftermarket rear
muffler

I chopped out the mid section muffler out of my setup... and the results were, well, LOUD.

I moved up to a 2.5" system with a 2.5" muffler with a dumped tip at the same time though...

...but now that I think about it, I could have simply cut out the resonator out of the original set up, and whacked another muffler on the end...

...oh well.
