as the heading indicates.... i found that my o2 sensor had crapped itself.... but No engine warning light... which is strange...

but after a few tests its 100% the o2 sensor.... yay $100 for a new one... :(

Engine light will not come on for O2 sensor.

Should be able to get one for the $60.00 area but you will have to wire it, better off spending the $100.00 and it will plug straight in.

Be interesting if you get better economy after it is installed

how do you test them

"""Engine light will not come on for O2 sensor."""

Only in 4 cyl magna after 1992... mine is a V6 and therefore should come on...

yeh i have ordered one already and will replace on the weekend!

Stereo god..
quick test is take out a spark plug (4cyl) or 2 (6cyl 1 from each bank)
and check the colour of the tip...

white tip = OK
black tip = Too rich
gunked up = burning oil which means that the rings are gone lol

this doesn't eliminate other factors but it is a starting point...
than considering that the AFR is controlled by readouts from the o2 sensor to the ECU... and the fact that i was getting 400kms to a tank :( and my exhaust is BLACK!!!!!!
i tested the O2 sensor and founrd that it wasn't reading correctly (check haynes manual for readout details..)

how did you get 700k's?
Like We only have a 64L fuel tank so your saying you ran it almost empty cause the car wouldnt get more then 9L/100k's
And was taht highway driving? or mixed, or city?

:stoopid: . my economy was crap when mine died. got one for $60 of ebay, unscrewed and unplugged the old one, screwed and plugged the new one straight in, 2 minute job.. all fixed.
600kms a tank? thats highway driving right?

well it looks like i am off to the parts shop to buy a new sensor then.... i get around 300ish to a tank at the moment and thats with new/injectors/filters/plugs/cap/leads.... dammit.. my car is a money pit.. but i love it...

good of you to bring this up otherwise i would never have botherd checking.. i would have just kept on going without worrying

davros..
check your spark plugs...
as said before.. if they are black then its running too rich... if they are white then its OK...
there are other reasons your fuel economy can go down the shute..

Here are all the codes

Code Item What to look for.
11 Oxygen Sensor Check sensor, the wiring and the connector.
12 MAS Airflow Meter Check Harness, especially where the harness meets with the main loom, Check the unit itself.
12 Intake Air Temp Sensor Check wiring, replace sensor.
14 Throttle Position Switch Check wiring, check to make sure switch is properly set. Check switch itself.
21 Coolant Temp Sensor Check wiring, test sensor.
22 Crank Angle Sensor Check Wiring, check/replace distributor.
23 Top Dead Centre Sensor Check wiring, check/replace distributor
24 Vehicle Speed Sensor Check wiring, check/replace Vehicle Speed Sensor
25 Barometric Pressure Assy Check Wiring, replace barometric Pressure assy.
31 Knock Sensor Check wiring, replace unit
36 Ignition Timing Disable Signal Check Wiring
41 Injector. Check Wiring, connections and test injector coil resistance
62 (V6) Intake Air Control Valve Position Sensor Check Wiring, and variable intake air control servo, if both ok replace surge tank.
9 Short Pulses System ok, no faults.

Generally in the V6 and the 4cyl the engine ligh WILL NOT come on. Yes I know I have only done all of the appropiate courses in the Magna EFI so how should I know?????

The ECU will flash the code 11 if the ECU thinks there is something up. The O2 sensor, as i have stated on many occasions is ignored in many of the operating conditions of driving thus while it iwll contribute to poor economy it will generally not be the total cause.

Wow, 700k's to a tank, that is better than they got off the factory floor, sure it is not a Toyota Prius? :bowrofl:

i dont doubt him, my sister's verada used to get nearly 700k's to a tank when it was still newsih all country driving... it still gets up to 550k's no worries, i get 450-500k's no real change with new engine

thx mate :)

oh by the way... turns out the o2 sensor may not be all of the problem as i filled up the other week and got 360 kms from full to empty (4 litres) left....
i think my fuel pressure regulator may have packed up...

700KMS A TANK!! Whoaaaaa are you sure adz??
i'd be happy with 450-500km a tank. I only get around 350km per tank even when the car was N/A :(

Honestly, saying "x-km's a tank" is completely useless, the only way you can compare consumptions is if you specify how many litres you used for those km's!
What do you define as "a tank"?? Your standard refill? Or the complete tank's-worth, which hopefully no-one is draining on a regular basis.

My standard fill is 45litres, 50max, which to my understanding is a good 20litres less than the tank capacity! That's "approaching" the empty mark, maybe 1/8th "full".

If I get around 450km's out of that it's fairly normalish for me, have gotten up to maybe 550, worst is about 380. I always calculate my useage, gives me an idea of whether there's anything not right with the engine.

You should be getting between about 9 and 11 km's per litre.

i get 300 if im lucky..time to put it in the mechanics i think.
