when driving around town with minimal acceleration my auto is staying in 1st gear untill it gets to about (3000 rpm / 40kph) is this the same for everyone? and also how can i get it to change out of first gear faster. when driving around town i leave the tran in 3rd so its not flicking in to 4th all the time. i would like 1st to change up at about 20 kph or something close to that.

you will need to reset the tranny. disconect the battery for about half an hour then plug it back in. now the tranny will have to relearn your driving styles. just drive slowly with light acceleration and it will change early. keep in mind though, if you feel like overtaking someone when its set like this, chances are it wont kick back on the highway...

Accelerate gently and when you get to 20, let go of the accelerate to trick the trans into
switching gears. It may not happen straight away but will eventually as we do have a
learning trans computer.

leaving it in 3 instead of D will also make each gear hold a little longer... i dont really see the point in leaving it in 3 around town? either way the trans has decided with your driving style that changing at 3000rpm is what you do
as they said disconnect the battery for a few mins and reconnect, drive around like a granny and it should be fixed

Why leave it in 3rd when in town? Your car has enough torque to use the overdrive gear.
Its not like you drive a little festiva or excel.
When you leave it in 3rd, the trans computer thinks you are driving under load (like going
uphill or towing) so adjusts the changes by staying longer in the 1st gear to maximise
torque. Very exxy on fuel usage.

yeah mmmmm the people who used to own it woulnt have flogged the car at all so i might try a reset and get it tuned in to my style which is almost granny style anyway. i was always told to stop the car from flicking in and out of 4th around town as dads commodoor flicks up and down all day long

My Auto repair place (Rowell & Searle on pulteney st) always told me to lock out 4th (on a 4 speed auto), said it will make the box last much longer. Will effect economy though. EA-EF taxies used to retrofit 3 speed borg warner auto's to their cabs (sounds crazy, but they did) Does anyone do this anymore? Can't on my 5speed tippy (unless I use the tippy all the time)
