well after a nice big discussion in my previouse thread, im starting my sound quality build up :D its gonna be done cheap as possible, with all install work done by me! so hopefully you'll see some nice fibre glass diy piccies :P im gonna be running an active 2way front stage concisting of focal k2 power 165kf mids and vifa xt25 ring radiators... i cant find anywhere to listen to the vifas so im just going on the rave reviews the seem to get everywhere, plus at 200 bucks a pair how could i go wrong lol, also if i move quickly i can get 2 brand new alpine mrp-f250 4 channel amps for $400 to run active off, they make a stout 180rms x 2 bridged at 4 ohms which is poifect:P sub bass is going to be taken care of by an alpine type x (maybe) gotta go check em out, if theyre the goods ill snap one up, cos at $350 for a basically brand new type x, i thinks a pretty good deal, also, if i want to become competitive in the caasq series im gonna get a new h/u... from the alpine range, as theyre tuning ability (bass engine pro... time allingment, great eq and ability to run active off the h/u) and great sound quality charateristics will bring the most out of my system
all up the components there is gonna cost around 700 dollars, excluding new head unit (my old stuff will be sold, so that will cancel out some of the costs) which i think is pretty good, installation shoudnt cost me more than a few sheets of mdf and some fibre glassing supplies
the install isnt going to be anything to wild, the xt 25's will probably get moulded into the a pillars (they're big mofo's... about 4 inches  ) ill bring the mids on axis with som mdf spacers behind stock door trims, as for the boot, im gonna fibre glass the spare wheel well, its gonna become the enclosure for the new sub, with the sub sitting inverted to show off its sexy basket and motor, and with running active im gonna have about 3 amps so they will be tastefully arranged around the 3 walls of the boot, so yeh qiute basic as ill only be entering in "caasq street" but it should still look pretty good im hoping

goign to check out the subs today, mate said if theyre the goods he'll buy me one for my birthday :D god i love my friends lol then its my birthday on tuesday (20  ) so with the birthday money ill get the 2 alpine amps, the way i see it is, ill have to wait a while to get a deal like that again if i miss out... and the vifa's will alwayse bee there... prioritising :D

nother question about going active.... ill be bridging the amps to 180rms X 2 at 4 ohms, should i run i amp for the tweets and one for the mids, or one for left side and one for the right side.... also, should i run seperate rcas to the second amp (using the rear output?) or just split the ones from the front out put? im figuring ill have better l/r seperation if i run another set of rcas....
thx for all the help so far,
tom
edit, can any one also verify the bridged output of an alpine mrp-f250? im gettin different info... one page says 100rms X 2 @ 4ohm...... another says 180rms X 2 @ 4ohm... any one clarify... ta

man this should be one hell of a system when its done
i wanna come have a listen :D
i've seen people use a seperate 2ch amp for one speaker and tweeter if that helps

thx fellas, hopefully when its all up and running and tuned properly i can get some top 3 placings... thats what im aiming for... if i can do that then ill go for the wins :D, now can any one help me with my head unit choice? im looking in the alpine range, its gotta have bass engine pro and i wanna be able to run active off it... and i like the bio-lite display lol the only thing in the current range that fits the bill is the cda-9855r.... and i dont think im to keen on the "glide touch" thing its got going on... would a cda-9857 be any good? im a real noob when it comes to alpine head units, ive only ever had pioneer ones.
cheers,
tom
Mr_Roberto
14-01-2007, 01:10 PM
that 9855R is a good deck but if you dont like the glidetech then go for the 9835, same features but it was last years model before the 9855
have you looked at eclipse decks? some of them are pretty decent
you'll need a deck with decent pre-outs, the alpine ones are only 4volts but some of the eclipse decks range between 6-8volts
bob_saget
14-01-2007, 01:26 PM
eclipse decks look messy to me, to many colours on the screen, plus i hate the dot-matrix style screens... looks so old fashioned, but thats just melol thx for the 9835 info, gonna go see what i can rustle up on that one
cheers:D
tom
Mr_Roberto
14-01-2007, 01:36 PM
i was thinking about getting the 9835 deck or the next one down 9833 (same as the 9835)
these were alittle out of my budget when i was buying a new h/u so i went for the 9831
still a good deck same features but bass engine plus and something else i cant remember
the 9835 and 9833 are hard to find and most likely you have to buy them used as they have been discontinued to make way for the 9853 and 9855
but i would pick the 9835 over the 9855 any day
im with you i dont really like the glidetech crap but i like the little motion films on them :D
Awesome :) Now we got 3 magna's that'll rip up the season!
My TE is set up with CDT Kama mids, Vifa tweets, Alpine 9835 deck, Eclipse XA4000 speaker amp running active, Clarion DPX-1000 @ 1ohm for my JL 10W6, and plenty of hours have been spent with myDisc tuning it like creazy :) i should be right for the 2007 CAASQ season :)
oh.. and im becoming a judge this year too :P

are you sure you got the right model number? cause im looking on the alpine website (has all manuals on everything) and cant find it
but theres the MRP-F240 that is 100watts rms x 2 at 4ohm (4ch amp)

oh and i know someone who works at alberts and give me good deals, i got a wicked deal when i first purchased my sound system only problem was that i had to go to alberts in morley :( but it was worth it

yeh but i can get 2 of the f250's for 350 bucks... brand spankers, still in box etc... ill probably go check out some decks tomorrow... i noticed when i was in jb last time they had a 9855r... apart from the glide tech it seems like the perfect unit... i could get used to it i guess
Mr_Roberto
14-01-2007, 03:10 PM
thats a good deal for those amps
yeah i've had a play around with the 9855R and the glide touch isnt too bad
the deck has decent features but the glide tech is what put me off
its pretty sensitive while moving your fingure along unless someone played with the settings before i came along :doubt:

i know! thats why i was tossing up to either got the new vifa tweets or the amps with my birthday money, considering the tweeters will alwayse be available in the shop im gonna get the amps, then the tweets next week... ive got a job with my girlfriends dad apparently haha.. but yeh, im gonna go have a play with some head units tomorrow and see what does the job... i have a feeling im gonna end up with a 9855r, oh welllol
Mr_Roberto
14-01-2007, 04:37 PM
yeah i reckon you'll end up getting the 9855R cause the 9835 are hard to find
only seen 1 or 2 pop up on ebay
i reckon go for those amps, cause if you dont like em you just sell them a get your money back
i was considering selling my deck.. but unfortunately, 7998R's arent too easy to find, and thats what i wanna upgrade to :P
awesome that your getting an Oz ME! ive been keen as to hear one, as a mate of mine over east uses one, and he was the Ametuer street champ in Vic for 06.
oh, and lets just say i got the XA for a LOT less than it should have cost me :)

7998r eh? phantom face one is it not?.... i just might be able to help you out:D ill call my mate and let you know, as for the oz me, great subs.... handle everything with style and finesse :D and they have plenty of output!..... as for the xa, let me put it this way, what do they retail for and what did you have to violate on yourself to get it really cheap :P
the retail for $800, i payed less than half :)
bob_saget
14-01-2007, 08:48 PM
dayum... they look like an awsome amp, individual channel gains yeh? oh and by the way, i am serious about the 7998r.... my mates got one, he got it a while ago off a friend and has no idea how to use any of the functions on it so he might be pretty impartial to selling it very cheap (as he got it VERY cheap... much like your XA :D ) ill chase him down and find out for ya
ohh that would be awesome. i'd be happy to either trade decks (9815 looks prettier for the user who isnt after features), or sell it myself (or to you cheap), to pay for the 7998 :)

well went and had a look at some head units today... alberts didnt even have anything with bass engine pro to play with.... jb had a 9855r...in all its useless piece of sh*t glory... i spent about 20 minutes playing with it and i couldnt find bass engine menu on the freaking thing! the sales girl was trying her hardest, she even rang the sales rep from alpine and he just said "oh yeh its in the menu"... like f*ck it was... like i said im a total noob when it comes to alpine decks, but youd think after 20 minutes youd at least stumble across what your after by chance:doubt: i spent a good hour and a half all up playing with alpine units, so i got most of it sussed, i just want to have a fiddle with the bass engine aspect of the units and learn how to use that
haha, yea im really not a fan of 9855's myself, love 9815, 9835, and never used 7998 been im keen as to.
bob_saget
15-01-2007, 06:39 PM
well, the girl from jb e-mailed me the 9855r user manual (swear to god she wants my wang) but yeh, turns out i was a button push away from what i wanted to have a play with :doubt: thats what ****s me about alpine units, every button has like... 3 different things it does, like the "band" button, just push it and it changes from fm to am etc.... but hold it for 2 or more seconds.... TADAAA out pops the mystical freakin menu you've been looking for for the past hour, guess it just takes some getting used to... i quite like the 9855r to be honest, the touch glide is a bit homer sexual but its not "that" bad... just hope i can offload my h/u in time and get that 9835.... yeh you know the one lol
but back onto my progress.... birthday tomorrow :P so should have 2 shiny new alpine mrd-f250's to play with by the weekend and i ordered my vifa xt25's, should be here by friday/monday :P and my mate who works at repco is nicking me a heap of fibre glass matting and resin and catalyst so should see some actual construction and installation progress mid next week,
cheers,
tom

got bored so installed the 9835 just then.... isnt it brilliant when all your speakers are running off an amp.. cuts h/u install down to mere minutes lol, but yeh, straight off the bat, with minimal tuning (by minimal i mean selecting a factory eq and adjusting woofer output lol) the sound quality compared to my pioneer was extremely noticeable, the most noticeable musical differance though was the bass... it seemed much tighter and refined (for 2 L7's thats quite something hehe) oh and as for finding all the bass engine menu's.... it took me about 5 minutes, with out a manual, it took me about an hour with the 9855r and id read the manual, and i still couldnt locate them!!... peices of crap they are, but yeh extremely happy with the end result, display is super clear and folder navigation is a breeze with a set up modelled on the i-pods controls, couldnt be happier really, now just gotta wait for my new tweeters, then i can install the xa-4000 and start tuning... oh and get my OZ Audio ME aswell :D

18-01-2007, 10:15 PM
i couldnt reccomend this unit enough, ive been a hard core pioneer h/u user eversince ive had my car, but this has won me over, i dont think ill go back to pioneer again... its funny, i used to have a full pioneer system in my car (literally everything) look in there now... not a pioneer logo to be seen (except for the floor mats lol) i most definatly will be calling on your help alot more in the weeks to come when i start tuning, one thing i keep thinking about, how should i set the settings on my amp if im controling everything from the hu? front and rear have their own set of controls, hi pass, lo pass, frequency etc...
were gonna have one of the big CAASQ judges flying over and coming to the comp on the 3rd dude, youll definently have to start coming to our meets, and get involved in sq. and if you wanna jump in with us, he will be teaching us tuning techniques, how to recognise imperfections in systems etc at the comp :)
bob_saget
18-01-2007, 10:31 PM
im gonna have to make the sound off on the third a definate on my calendar... sounds like its goign to be a very worthwhile thing, hopefully can sponge up some knowledge :D wish i had a functioning caa account... all i can do is watch  haha oh wells
edit, was just on the i-personalise website, on my head unit, should i set the x-over to 2 way or 3 way? cos 3 way gives you control of high pass for your tweets, high pass for your mids, low pass for your mids and low pass for sub where as normal (2 way) give high pass for tweets and fronts, then some thing for rears and low pass for subs??? so yeh, which one, i was thinkin 3way?
if your running active and wanna use the deck to control x-over points etc (which you do), then yea, set it to 3-way :)
bob_saget
19-01-2007, 02:39 PM
youd be the man for this question... the filter settings on the amp??? just leave em all how they are? (except for the gains of course) and do you have left running of the front channels and rights off the rear (or vice versa, doesnt really matter id imagine) or mids off front and tweets of rear?... just these few finer details i keep going over in my head then i just end up more confused lol, also if you could give me some t/a tips that would be sweet... but if you dont wanna give away your settings its cool :)........ ill just steal them while your not looking at mandurah :bowrofl:
ahaha, i leave off all of the amp filters, the deck does it all, and i run my woofers off the rear channels, and tweeters off the front channels, that way your not giving weird loads to the pairs of channels or anything, and you have a seperate gain for tweets and woofers, giving you a lot more tunability. :)
bob_saget
19-01-2007, 05:12 PM
thats what i was thinking... glad im on the right track, so filters both on "hi", mono switch in "off" position... set the gains then dont touch all the other dials and tune from the head unit? sweet, might put the xa-4000 in tomorrow and have a play around, i did minor t/a and eq tuning today witht he current set up but the highs are just way to over powering and not getting any mid bass with it at the moment... in general it sound like sh*t, so yeh, think ill take the dive tomorrow and go active :D

well i just installed my eclipse xa-4000 and went active with my front stage.... was loving the new found grunt in my mid range and the tune-a-bility is fantastic with the alpine 9835, so much midbass and can tune the harsh focal tweeters to a more pleasurable level :D ... and then..... i turned the car on and ENGINE NOISE!!!!111!! oh noes!, was getting engine noise through the front set of rca's (comin out my tweeters :doubt: ) so yeh, currently re-running my interconnects and hoping that fixes the problem, just hoping i didnt get stooged with the deck and the rear out-out is on the fritz haha.... oh and my IDMAX should be here in a week :D
wish me luck lol,
tom
re-routed rca's.... still getting engine noise though grrr.... not as bad but... hardly noticeable, but still dont want it there, any reccomendations on what i could do? all grounds are good, rca's are brand new mid/top end ones (twisted desing, double shielded) what could it be guys?
Mr_Roberto
02-02-2007, 06:14 PM
its it more of a stadic noise?
upgraded the ground wires in your engine bay? (most likely you have)
bob_saget
02-02-2007, 07:19 PM
yeh its a high pitched squealing/crackly noise, its hardly audible now though since re running the rca's... but no, odly enough i havnt upgraded the earths, i got plenty of 2awg and 0awg laying round, might do that tomorrow

was it doing it before you installed your new deck?

Got a pic of where you have your tweeters? I'm getting some Morel Hybrids in the next couple weeks and am looking for ideas for the tweeters. My current ones are in the kick panels but im not overly happy with the stage height. The guys at Tonkins (where I'm getting them installed) recommended making a fiberglass mount in the A pillars, I'm just not sure where though...

nah, some earopro twisted stuff, like 16 or 18 awg, something like that... it was doing it, but only the tiniest amount, you couldnt hear it unless you put your ear right up to the speakers, but its the front set thats doing it and it wasnt before, only since i ran the new set its started doing it :doubt:
POITA- ive flush mounted mine just below that little vent thingy on the window line, the stage is still a little low though, sound like its around neck/upper chest hight, im fibre glassing my vifas into the a-pillar/sail area when they arrive (well, ill play around with a few positions first ofcourse :P )

well i upgraded my earths, only minor though, i got a 0awg coming off the battery to a solid copper busbar, the 2awg ro the intake manifold and another 2awg to the firewall, but i dont think thats my problem.... still getting engine noise, i switched the rca's around and then i came out the mids... so im thinking its the deck or the rca's, might take it somewhere in the next few days to have it looked at, but in the mean time can anyone sujjest anything else?
on another note, went down to the sound off yesterday, was a good day, nice to meet some of the caa people, also met woob, would of been good to talk to him a bit more but he was a bit busy helping out with the comp.... and congrats to him for a 136db using one 10" w6 :D
and phil and dave getting in there having a go, i think phil would get a higher reading just from the whistle from his engine and the boot rattle haha
