I wouldnt say their common........but a lot more people are doing them. Do a forum search, and go through Google. Car Audio Australia is also a good place, they have a section dedicated to carputers. http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/index.php?showforum=97

Do a search on here for carputers and you will turn up a bit of stuff. Biggy has a pretty sweet install with a lot of pics and details of how he did it, what he used etc etc. I actually did a search for it about 3 hours ago!
try www.mp3car.com and search for magnas and you will find Biggy's work log off his install. Very hot stuff!

im thinking about buying a 7" touch screen from Jaycar, wireless mouse and keyboard, inverter and mouting my laptop under the pasenger seat so i can make on the run adjustments to the Gready ecu. The added bonus is i can run dig audio and use the dvd player.
Edit: also seen a Carputer addvertized in a car mag think price was $2500 the main ecu mounts in da boot and there is a 7" fold out screen like the normal DVD screens the bonus with this is there is a user interface which contains things like radio, tv, Wifi, DVD, bluetooth, and basicly all the funtions that come with a home Mulimedia system. come to think about this it is money well spent to think what u have to buy sepretly to make all this us, ie a basic DVD system will cost u $2000.

I had a carputer in my old car, pissed that idea off because it's not my style of music management. It was a HP-Evectra with a Pentium 3 600mhz processor, 256mb SDRAM, 80gb HDD, no cd drive and ran video through an 8 inch touchscreen. The evectra was awesome because it ran off 19v DC power, so no inverter was necessary, just a step-up converter from Jaycar for laptop charging. One day I might put it back in.
