With headlights on, the lights behind the instrument cluster don't work and the digital clock light goes off. The slide control for brightening the instrument light cluster doesn't work so I'm assuming the problem is a faulty rheostat.

Can somebody tell me where the rheostat is located and whether it is easily replaced. Does it simply form an integral part of the dimming slide control or is it a separate item?

Thanks for your help.

Slide control? Is it an Elite or SE? I've only ever had the poverty pack GLX and Executive and they have a rotary rheostat.

if you have the wing controller, you need to take it apart to get to the slider + dimmer box. the slider's wires are soldered in the dimmer box. the dimmer box comes out easy though.

take steeringwheel off, centre it before you take it off so you put it back on correctly
take 4 screws behind the steering wheel
take off the covers for the wing controller (look under)
unplug the 4 big plugs
take it off the steering coloum

Thanks Coldamus and BCX7. It's a wing controller on a SE and the info you have provided is very helpful. It sounds pretty straightforward..........a holiday job to do tomorrow.
