Meh... the magna is too low.

So i have my car sitting out front, contemplating calling NRMA to go tow it to a repairers, but i want to make sure i can call ahead and get quotes for repairing it before actually getting it towed.

What exactly is the problem, and can someone tell me what will need to be replaced and what costs it would roughly be? (My mechanic is on holidays until the 22nd) so i have to go find someone else :(

I dont know much, but im guessing its the sump... ive looked around and im lead to believe the sump comes in two pieces ... one at the top and an aluminium piece at the bottom with the plug in it. Would it involve much labour in having the sump replaced?

Cheers.

Can't assess problem until you identify exactly where the oil is coming from.

Start with basics - can you see where the oil is coming from, is sump plug loose, is oil filter loose. Is it coming from a gasket around the edge of something or is it coming through a hole in something. Use a small mirror if you have to so you can look around the engine.

Is it engine or transmission oil on the ground ? - look at your dipsticks if you can't tell the difference. Should smell different too.

Its the sump.

Cheap to replace (goto a wreckers is your best bet)

Best to get a new sump gasket ($15) aswell.

Someone on here will have a gregory's to give you the correct torque settings for the bolts on the sump.

DIY in 30mins..

Looks like back corner is pinched and split.

see that big metal round thingie there.. its coming from the corner side towards the rear of the car... i put my finger on it, and its a hole about 5mmX5mm.

Cheers for that bain... parts to inquire over the phone (and get them to remove from a wrecked magna)??
1. sump?
2. sump gasket?

ive heard things like removing engine and removing exhaust to fix..(albeit from not the smartest people) = high labour costs... anything like that assosiated to you think? or is it that dead set simple?

3rd Gens dont use sump gaskets.

Go to an auto shop and ask for some glue stuff that can be used for sumps.

you can get a tube of gasket sealer (blue colour liquid) which is a good sealant for sumps..
but yeh its an easy job :) ... but you will need 5 litres of engine oil to go with it... and you need to leave the car for a few hours to let the sealant set.

no need to remove the engine... pfft who told you that?
you need to remove the crossmember under the upper section of the sump and one of the brackets next to it (forget what its called) and there are a few other little bits and peices..

Ahh there you go.. didnt know that! - Im sure there was a gasket available for the 3rd gen sump..

Dee: Ask for the bottom section of the sump - Sump pan?. They will know what you're talking about.

Yea, ta... got it all and just put it all together :D Brand spankers.. zero oil left... sounded ragged when i drove it into the driveway.

Theres a silicon lining instead of the gasket... i put some extra selant on it anyway..

dang.. you should see the old sump.. lol it was ****ed to say the least.

PS: Size 10 socket needed :D

PPS: Excessive lowering is bad mmk

At least you got us to have a look before you send it in. My friend did not ask for opinions and send it in and came out with a $300.00 repair bill which did not eve repair the oil sump.

Hope you get you car fixed.

Doh! lol

Yah, I do know, but was just saying that she was lucky to have other people to look at to help her examine the cost etc... I have seen people sending their cars in without a knowledge and came back with a fat bill just because they had no idea what to change.

Can we place bets as to what it was?

A good friend of mine once ripped a massive 10cm long gash in his sump after driving over a silent cop... on a flat road too..

Im guessing it was one of them...
