Another topic thats been done to death so one more thread wont hurt. :)
Just came back to Canberra from Melb after a couple of weeks well earnt holidays and after resetting the trip comp on departing Canb I arived in Melb with an average consumption of 8.4 ltrs per 100 kms purely highway travel. That was with 3 adults and a piece of crap 13 year old whining #$%$ and with a boot load of luggage and the aircon on about half the way.
Im impressed.
I also checked my speedo accuracy at the digital check point just outside of Albury southbound and with my speedo sitting right on 110 the speed check read 105. That seems pretty fair as I assume they are mostly out around 2-5 kays at 100. Anybody disagree??
Cheers!

that's pretty good. my TJ (I know, it's not a 380) got 8.1 from Canberra to Sydney (8.4 after driving through 9AM traffic to Mona Vale).

can't argue with you... I checked my speedo with a GPS before and after I changed my rims (stock 15s up to 18s). before it was 5kmh out at 100kmh, after it was right on. :)

my speedo on my TJ got the same through a speed check thing on my way into canberra was exactly 5 over. i got 7.9 litres on my last highway trip. i find the trip computer slightly inaccurate it told me 8.2 for 3 tanks of fuel and when i did the sums on my fone it came up at 7.9 everytime. either or not bad

That's good! I was wondering if they could drop into the 8s. The best I've seen (for an entire tank) is 9.4 on Shell 95, just driving to and from work mostly using the M4.
Was that regular fuel?
I wonder if the whiney piece of crap 13 year old had any effect on it?

Yep, was regular fuel.
Indeed...that whiney piece of crap 13 year old may have had an affect.....I think everytime I snapped my head around to face her I may have created a negative G affect thus slowing the car down....

When I was on my L's we drove from Adelaide to Port Pirie @ 80km/h all the way (unless the speed limit was lower and dad telling me to go to 90) in our KJ Verada with 3 adults and 2 children in the car as well as a completely full boot and achieved 6.6lt/100km which my dad thought was unreal.

That is an unreal figure but at 80 kays cruising quite believable.
I did fail to mention that most of my driving was done with "snooze control" set to 115.

Gee i wish i could get those figures.
Did a 370km country drive on the weekend round parts of Victoria. Pure cruise at 100k's with just me and the misses in the KJ AWD.
I nearly had heart failure when i flicked to average fuel which i reset when we left. It was at 9.2. That is the BEST i have ever seen it.
I usually struggle to get it under 10. I drove from Sydney to melb along the hume and the best i got was 10.1 at 110km/h tje whole way.

Was the wind with you? Driving from Adelaide back to Sydney, my AWD was getting ~10.1, while on the way over it was ~9.4. When I changed direction (mouliamen to Hay), the consumption reduced a fair amount. Got up to 11 in the Snowies though, but there was lots of slow climbing in parts, and narrow roads. Just me in the car, put the boot was full of ****.
While we are talking TJ figures, in my dads 3.5L 4 speed auto, we went around qld on the winding highways, bundy to rocky, and bundy to brisbane and i was getting 8.0, at one point i had it at 7.6 after a long drive, thats with no cruise control.
At 110 the instant fuel consumption was around 6.6

Wondering what your gearing is and what your final drive ratio is??
Not sure on the final drive ratio of the 380 but with the 5 speed auto it sits right on 2000rpm at 110ish.
Also driving all 4 wheels does make a difference in fuel consumption.

It's usally the speedo checks that are out more then your speedo. I drove through on in melbourne with a GPS unit in my car. I drove past at an indicated 100kph, the GPS showed 98kph and the overhead speed check showed 91kph!!!!
Also guys this is the 380 section, we all know what the magnas do in the 3rg gen section. Lets see what the 380s are getting. :)

LOL.. nearly forgot about that. Even though my other post wasn't about a 380 rather a 3rd Gen I aspire to one day own a 380 so I thought I would post my figure to compare it to the 380's (although mine is lower mainly due to driving conditions/restrictions).

What type of fuel were you using?
Have you tried one of these lengthy drives on a higher octane?
I've found my 380 likes Shell and BP 98 to other brand 98s (and it hates Mobil).
I've seen improved economy on higher octane.

Just using standard shell fuel.
For memory the KJ AWD does round 2500/2600 at 110km/h. does about 2300 for memory at 100k's.
Have used higher octane's before with no noticable difference. Maybe the AWD gear sucks out all the advantage of a better fuel, also the extra weight.

This is an interesting thread for a very near owner of a 380, and a person who likes to travel on the highway. At the moment I am driving a first Gen, so I am looking forward to the better fuel economy and the damn cruise control! lol
Any other 380 owners out there with highway fuel readings???

In the hire car(380 ES) over xmas in NZ I did about 3000kms in 25 days, best I got was 10L/100km(city and highway). But that was laden most of the time and there were a lot of hills involved. Also unlike the Canberra to Sydney road you have to boot it to pass someone because nearly everyone who was going slow(75-90 in 100km zones - with long queues behind them) sped up as soon as they hit the passing lanes. Unfortunately this tactic was no match for my "heavy' foot on the 380 gas pedal. The 5 spd auto was much better matched to the engine unlike the 4spd tippy in my TJ.
I Was quite happy with the 380's consumption, and on one 200km trip which didn't involve too much passing (although quite a few hills) I managed to get a 9L/100km. I could quite imagine getting low 8's or better on a road like Canberra to Sydney (I get mid 8's in my TJ).
The 380 seemed to do better in the city, with around 11-12 as oposed to 13s I get in my TJ, but that could have something to do with all the 80km zones in Canberra opposed to the 50's in NZ towns.

Anyone tried the new V Power fuel yet? i hear it does good when it comes to peformance.

I'm down in Port Fairy at the moment tnd once again I was shocked on how good the fuel was in the kj awd. Was on 14l when we left home and was down round 9.1 at Geelong. Best I've ever seen from it and that was with a fully loaded car boot and cabin. Maybe she is bettering with age just clocking 80,000 k's.

holy cow!...how do u guys to do it? Before i had my oxygen sensor replaced i was getting around 12.5L/100km....after replacing....i'm getting 9.5L/km which i thought was great driving 100-110 (to speed limit) 7 hours trip. But now that i see u guys can get around 8L/km ....i can't believe my eyes.
i used cruise control but how to get it that low?

Yes I've used the V-Power 95 & 98 (Optimax), but for me it wasn't too great - but maybe because the car was still very new at that time.
I've noticed my car like Shell 91 fuel (for regular stuff) and BP 95 fuel (for higher octane).
Will try that Extreme again one day now that my car has been run in (and while prices are low-ish).
Try Extreme in your Magna. Used to use it in my previous TF and I could really feel the extra octane.

On the Hume FWY with Cruise set just over 110km/h (~113km/h) the instant gauge hovered around the 9-10 mark. Was in 5th gear doing almost 3000rpm, the manual 380's need an extra gear.

Agreed. Like I said in an earlier post, in my auto my 380 is doing around 2000rpm whilst sitting on around 110-115. It also has enough torque at those revs not to be kicking back to 4th very often when negotiating hills. That would make some difference IMO.

Actually, in the end I'm quite happy having the auto over the manual. Call me a grandpa, I don't care, but the gearing for fuel economy is way better and the torque is reasonably impressive for a V6. There is a long hill on the way home near my place that the 380 goes up at 70kmh staying in fifth all the way at 1000 - 1100 rpm. At first i used to manually change back to fourth because I didn't like it straining but now that it has a few miles under it's belt I'm comfortable with it.

That's pretty good for a heavy car, my TL got 7.2lt per hundred with 3 peps in it, air con on and cruise control on going from brizzie to byron, reckon if I kept going it would have gotten into the 6's. That's sitting at 2600rpm at 100kph and what ever it does at 110kph

Just got back from Port Fairy. By the end of the 800km weekend of driving, the KJ AWD was saying average 8.9l which is the lowest i have ever seen it and that was fully loaded boot and back seat to the roof with camping gear etc.
When i bought it from Sydney and drove it back to melb, all the way on cruise, the best i ever got was 9.5. I woiunder why it has changed? It had 30,000k's when i got it and now just gone 80,000.
The only thing i could think of was maybe the guy that owned it in sydney did heaps of city driving and now it mainly does 100km/h up and down the monash fwy so maybe it has cleaned it out a bit or something? Dont know. Any thoughts?

tailwind?? For the weight of the latter model cars such figures are certainly impressive.
lol i still got 9.15L/100k's with hammering and driving with a broken cat (snapped), i love having a lightish car. If i had cruise control im sure i could get these numbers to drop... i just drive faster so my foot doesnt get sore:P
