Hi peoples!
Getting a tapping noise in the car, but goes away when i top up with oil.
If i were to use a thicker oil than 20-50w for the 6G72 would this be good?
Does anyone know of a thicker oil as well?
What are your recommendations?
Thanks :D

Nope. wouldnt reccomend using anything thicker for the 6G72. Now what do ya mean it goes away when you top up with oil?.. like it starts making the noise when oil level is low?

Woo! Thanks for the quick replies!
I just want something temporary, i guess.
Car munches oil a lot. Topped up a month ago.
When it runs low on oil it does this tack tack tack noise and as I accelerate, it doesn't go away. It just gets faster.
But when i top up with 1 litre of oil, it'll go away! Until the engine burns that top up away!

Of course it taps... most do when they need oil or oil change... its the lifters n stuff.... u can get a bottle of lifter free up stuff (even from big W) which helps with the tapping noise, or get ur oil leak or munch fixed... maybe do a service n when u r filling up oil put a bottle of that "80,000km oil additive" crap from big W in.

I'd definately find the source of the problem soon mate. Surely it cant be burning that much oil. There has to a leak somewhere? Any wet patches on the driveway at all?

STP make a 35/70... all depends how thick you want to go.

cant you get that stuff from supercheap or the servo thats an oil additive like stop smoke of something. that should work if this new oil doesnt. i know of people who have just run their cars on 4-5l of stop smoke, and it does stay there longer than oil :)
my old subaru used to burn through about 4L of oil per month :) tho the engine had done 550,000km with no rebuild :)

Ahh theyre a beast! I've got a leone with 455,000 on the clock... original everything. No rebuild either... they're the best! Runs perfect... uses no oil & is very economical on fuel!
Runs better than some cars i've been in at 200,000kms & under.

Thanks for all the input guys.
Using 25-60w Penzoil older engines oil designed for engines that've done over 210 000kms

Christ man why dont you just use mud, if your burning thru viscosity 20-50 I would be checkin somethin else other then different thickness of oils, is the vehicle blowing a Sh!tload of smoke at start up ??... If so describe the colour

It does! It blows out a grey smoke at startup!
Don't tell me it's the valve stem seals again cos i just got them done 2½ months ago!

If i'm not mistaken you don't lose oil thru valve stem seals, you lose compression pressure when the valve close and cant seal due to "valve seat recession."
FYI, the last 2 numbers of the oil grade indicates the upper temperature band that the oil will remain within a certian viscosity band. So the higher the number translates to a relatively more thicker oil.
Doesn't grey smoke mean oil's leaking into the engine via pistons?
