what sort of power and behaviour has lead to broken gear boxes and what exactly has broken in them?

I was under the impression that the boxes were quite tough.

I was under the impression that the boxes were quite tough.

Since I bought my car its been on the road 3 weeks and I've been through two gearbox's. The first one was 110km old and it blew up just after doing 210km/h for around 4 hours straight and the second one was 180km old and it blew up after driving round Adelaide for 2 weeks.

That will give a bit of an idea for you.

They are. The manuals very much so and auto's/tippy's too. There's always lemons. Mate, Dave from RPW with his million horsepower twin turbo magna is still running the standard gearbox (Ralliart LSD I think?)

To the original poster: you might want to specify if you are referring to auto or manual transmissions.

In reference to your post in the thread about my possible diff problems..... You might want to look up the phone number for Eddy Wreckers in Adelaide and talk to Ian Eddy.

Ian has been racing a TL magna in Improved Production for quite some time. He has a Kazz LSD fitted which was sourced for him by a performance diff shop in Adelaide. I made some enquiries with them - and they were able to go back through their sales history and confirm the part they put in Ians car.

There we go. Both are extremelly strong. I think the TJ Magna that runs in the car races seen on SBS during Speedweek runs the Ralliart LSD?

Definately manual. I have a complete 380 drivetrain, but will be in RWD format with 255 'R' tyres so much more grip, hence the query.

what do you mean rear wheel drive?

I thought 380's were front wheel drive.

they are, but i can rememebr this dude making a shell and running a mid engined rwd ie mount the fwd g/box at rear driveaxle, ie not going in magna.

Near impossible to convert a fwd g/box to run a driveshaft straight out the back.

I assume it means he's building a purpose built race car with a rear engine / RWD setup. The engine will be in east/west (or west/east) configuration. In which case - there's not really any point asking magna for advise on this forum, because no-one here is going to be able to answer your question sufficiently.

The autos die because they overheat, i remember Bain saying his tippy would start slipping after a prolonged thrashing, 4 hours at 210kph pretty much qualifies as a thrashing.

The manual boxes are strong but people seem to have a knack for breaking the diffs. In a straight line you'd have to drop the clutch hard and often to snap it, but around a corner the forces are exponential and especially more so if your wheels are bigger, explains how people break them doing hasty u turns in a relatively unthrashed car.

You are correct WRT the application. I am the publisher of Race Magazine and the car is the project car in that publication. This means that Magna specific information is not relevant, however driveline information is relevant.

using my psychic abilitys to control my right hand and use the mouse to scroll up i am thinking that he may be making a rwd mid engined 380.... :P

or a 380 driveline mounted in the rear of a custom chassis? just a custom chassis could be anything from an off-road buggy (seen a few running magna 3.5s) or an open wheeler track monster

It's no secret, the Mitsubishi Auto's are shocking, theres always issues with them - you will notice posts about auto's on here are frequent, with issues. Even if you do a search theres well over thousands of Questions/Problems concerning them.

Id never buy another Magna thats Auto, id go a tiptronic or manual, but its different for everyone.

Honda or Nissan my next car!

The tiptronics are just the same as the autos, just with an electronic over ride function.

The car will be an enclosed sports car about Cayman size. I know what it will look like, but that is not information to be released yet. Wheelbase 2570, ht 1245, wt 900.
Chassis is similar to this: http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p234/NRoshier/godivasketch3.jpg
