OI!
It isnt low-end crap at all... it is the model before yours. Just as good... I have 2 of them, and with a proper amp, they will crank!
For the current price of $99 it is a seriously great value sub.

hey res,
so you say those subs are good?
howz the bass??

The bass is reasonable... I have a very shitty amp powering both of them right now, but even then they make a solid rumble.
To get sony subs moving you need a top amp... for $99 you cant go wrong with the XLS1220.
With a solid amp, CYPHER will be envious of my twins, i guarantee it 8)

my mate has the top one in his excel (the same 199 sub and box package) and it goes alright. but u have to power them properly. i'm designing him a nice custom ported box for it this weekend actually.

If you only have the one sub, get this amp:
http://www.sony.com.au/xplod/products/index.cfm?catid=19554&prodid=XM280GTX
It will give you 200W RMS, whereas the sub is rated at max 250W RMS, so its right up at full capacity to make the thing move...
if like me, you have twins, get this amp (which i will be upgrading to)
http://www.sony.com.au/xplod/products/index.cfm?catid=19554&prodid=XM2165GTX
it will give them both 165W RMS, which is basically 330W of bass
the 444w amp you have pictured is no where near sufficient :)

the cost is whats holding me back...
i'm not after huge bass.. just maybe a good thud that can be heard...
with the XM444 cant you do somthing like "bridging" so you can give the sub more power...?? or am i wrong... ;)

for $329 you'd get the 444w, use the money saved on not getting the P5 sub and spending it on the $399 amp for much better performance

Well - ok - thought I would add my input into this
The two subs you have displayed are also different power subs - Cyphers Sub is a 1200Watt sub run off a 1000W amp -
the other sony subs for memory - are nothing overly flash - but i am comparing it to the top level of Sony - that i fitted to Cyphers car.
And Res - mate - sorry - but until you construct a solid (sealed) box to size those subs and power them properly - they are not gonna meet the bass potential of Dan's
Oh - and the wire - for memory is streetwise - it is just a 4 gauge power / earth cable with a normal 18 gauge wire for the remote wire.

that is absolute bullshit, you *cannot* compare 2 x 99 dollar subs with 1 x 700+ dollar sub
its like trying to compare a cessna to a 767 - there is no comparison
even with a fully sealed, manufactured enclosure you are still driving two shitty muddy non-musical subs and the proof is in the listening.
bottom line, you get what you pay for

Agreed, you would be better off getting an entry level JL, Kicker, Fusion Comp range, Cadence Ultra Orange to suit your application. For 12inchers, I know the Fusion and Cadance have a sensivity of 92+db with both if not all sony subs coming in with 89db, making the other 2 subs more efficient ( louder )
As for sound quality.. how can you even compare an entry level JLw0 to any sony sub. Sad thing is, even though only rated at 125 - 150wrms the JL will sound better and will probably be louder than any sony sub.
At autobarn seen a guy put 500WRMS into a P5 10inch.. think they are rated at 250WRMS or something and cranked it to 17 before it bottomed out... sad really, the shop didnt even shake.
If your on a $500 sub + amp budget like most people here seem to be working with, get a $200 sub like the JL or Fusion, get off your arse and build your own box for about $30- $50 and get a jaycar 2x 150WRMS amp to power it. Power = control.
Its fine to go with sony if you wish.. but dont start complaining when you get results like booya of only 123db from a fully powered 15inch sub.

Booya's system could be made to pump alot louder - it's just his isn't in a sealed enclosure - it is just sitting there mounted in teh floor - so yeah - it could be a lot louder!!

Firstly, my subs are now $99 because they are old, and manufacturers are clearing them.
Secondly, Dan's sub is not $700+. It is $199. It would REALLY interest me where you plucked that figure from.
My 2 subs are worth $169 RRP still, but as I said, they are old and being cleared.
Everyone is getting so hyped up... "omg they are $99 they are so shit blah blah"
It is a top-range Sony Subwoofer. It has simply now been over-taken by the P5 that Dan has. It is NOT a shit subwoofer.
My one is from 2001, Dans is 2002/3. Simple as that.

I know I know, I've already got some proper MDF in the garage waiting for me to design something.

And i bet that with a 2cuft 18mm MDF sealed enclosure he would still only get 134 - 6db tops. Tested with 300WRMS the 15inch woofer only got 133db in that environment. Im sorry 123db from a 15 is quite laughable. A vifa 8 inch woofer ( $99 ) can get 110db with only 100WRMS ( 1.4cuft ported enclosure).
Granted sony are a good woofer in the under $150 range.. ( ha avalance and boss are " worthy compeditors" ) but why not save for an extra week and get something that you could be trully proud of. :D

YEP! USAUDIO amps and subs (probably even speakers) are cheaper and would go much louder then sony.... i seen a sound off where a guy had a TX5 hatch, running all usaudio gear, made about 140-150dB with a single 15 running off a $700 amp....
