Dears
I've read somewhere that is it a good idea to re-wire, specially power (constant, switched and ground) a 2nd generation when installing a new head unit. My question is: do I really need to do this, even for a pretty basic configuration?
I just bought a 1995 MAGNA executive TS. It came without headunit but the original wiring is still there. I bought a sony cdx-gt150 and wish to install it by myself. Want to use the original front speakers (two 4" in the dash) and add two in the rear shelf (two 6x9"). No amplifiers. Just a basic configuration. Do you think I still need to change the power cables?
And, what if I want to listen music while ignition off? Can I just connect the switched input of my headunit to a constant 12v? If yes, can I use the same constant wire that is already there? I mean, connect the same wire to both switched and constant inputs of my headunit? Is it dangerous?
Cheers

I would be getting a wiring harness mate
No need to re wire
I run 2 amps, 2 subs, 4 speakers, a PS2, Screen, and all that crap all on stock wiring.
The system you will be putting in will simply not be able to draw enough current to warrent a re-wire of your system.
You will be fine

With my 93 TR, didn't rewire anything, had a 50W x 4 HU the 4" paper cones and 2 210W 6x9's in the back with no dramas for months, only thing I found was the HU would continue to draw power for about 10seconds after the car was switched off. However when the headlights are on it goes off straight away.
I wouldn't re-wire anything, I doubt it needs it. Pauls a great example as to why.

Damn you crazy :P
Oh well, i have fried a few wires before, was not fun when you see smoke everywhere.
From my experience you can draw something like 35-40 amp (400-500 watt) before you fry the standard power cable (constant) not sure about time for me it was something like half an hour.
But that aside your set up will have no way in hell to pull that much, so all is good.

Also running a car cooler/warmer from it too lol

Nope. I just installed a gt150, had been running a sanyo of similar specs for the past few years, stock fronts, 6x9s in the back, absolutely no worries with the stock wiring. Also ISO mounted, so no sucker can rip it out without removing the entire centre console.
I'm putting in door 6's soon, and maybe a small sub, so I guess I might have to start looking at a small amp, at least for the sub. Think I have one lying around here somewhere...
Here's some pics, don't think they'll be of much use though. RCA's on the rears for quick disconnect (wagon doesn't have existing wiring), rest is stock wiring. Oh, and a hard-drive power connector for the clock.
(All of my center console lights are red, and my speedo cluster and interior lights are white LED, so the sony fits right in!:D One of the only real reasons I "upgraded" to Lucifer's "old" stereo)

Wiring Harnesses save you a whole lotta time trying to find which cable needs to be soldered to each corresponding wire...
I recently had my Clarion DXZ656MP installed and it was way easier to rock up to Jaycar and have them give me Toyota->ISO, and then ISO->Clarion
It was $40 well spent...

Think that it would have gotten very hot and melted because by the sounds of it he just connected a 9.6v? or what ever battery to the car to charge it and it would have taken alot more than 3A but hey nothing like the smell of plastic melting:cool:

well depending on your level of experience i would prefer $.5 of solder than $40 for a couple of connectors but it would be easier if you dont really know what your doing.
Just on the side, was very suprised when installing my old panasonic (not that old:P still MP3/WMA model) in my missus' car she already had the same color wiring as my head unit (yellow, red and black or pwr, acc and ground) it was a lancer with stock head unit? is this normal?
But ergomes, if your around melbournes northern suberbs, would be more than happy to help install the head unit if you need it. Just drop me a PM if you want.

I successfully installed my HU this Sunday! I used the stock wiring and everything is working well. By the way, I had to use the bracket from the new HU. Someone lost the left side of the metal part the original HU comes attached to. It took me almost 40 min to figure out how to do that and have the HU not shaking all the time. Does someone knows where can I find that specific part?
Cheers
