View Full Version : What amp for Morel Hybrids?

Hi all,

Hopefully in the next few weeks (when school starts whenever that is) I will be getting a set of Morel Hybrid Ovation 6 splits from FHRX!!!
Plan is to shift my Morel Pulse 6 splits to the rear and leave them running from the Response 2x150W amp, and put the Hybrids up the front and get a new amp.
I will be getting custom angled MDF baffles made up and custom fibreglass A-Pillar mounts for the tweeters.

Now question is... what amp for them. I can get Response wholesale but that would be a huge waste on such a sweet speaker. Bear in mind they are a 160Wrms speaker, so I want a decent amp.
I have been looking at the new Alpine PDX-2.150 which is a digital Class-D amp 2x150W. The damping factor is awesome. Its also very compact (26x20x7cm). I can get this for just under $600.

The other one is the new Focal analogue amps FP2.150. Again a sweet amp and a similar price to the Alpine PDX. Bit bigger though 35x28x5cm.

Any suggestions? I want under $600 as already my system has cost me double what I originally wanted :P

Nice choice of speaker, I used to run a pair and still use the tweets from these for ambients. They are bi ampable through the passive xover too.

Never heard the pdx amps... but they look awesome. Im sure either of those options would leave you very happy. Although traditionally i'd go class ab/class a for highs, there are a few companies coming out with class d nowadays and im sure the technologies improved dramatically.

Otherwise I'd look at audison, tru tech, soundstream reference, mbquart, eclipse and so on. Not so upto date with rrp of the new gear nowadays. But don't go over the top with amps... the $600 price tag is a good start, dont skimp on wiring.

Peace

Tim

Thanks Tim,

Yeah $600 is sort of the max I want to spend. Should be able to get something nice for that price. I want money left over for the install :P

I have 2 gauge cable to the boot from battery so that isn't a problem. Need to get Barry's earthing kit now.

Even go an older alpine amp with a lot of power (mrv v12 dc straight series) second hand... Might be able to find one without too many scuffs. Then you could save a lot of money

Yeah that's true... I'm a bit wary of second hand stuff as it always seems to break on me :(
But if you see anything let me know!

could go an Audison SRX5, 2x150W RMS and 1x180W RMS @ 4Ohms (could use the other for a sub?)
http://www.audison.it/content/srx5foto2.jpg
http://www.audison.it/content/srx5tab_e.gif

dunno bout size/prices tho!

or the Audison SRX2S, 2x180W RMS @ 4Ohms (would that be a lil too overpowering for them tho?)
http://www.audison.it/content/srx2sfoto2.jpg
http://www.audison.it/content/srx2stab_e.gif

both from wat i can see from a google search sell for under $700.

hmmm that Audison SRx2S sounds good... FHRX has them advertised for $510 on special right now... thats a pretty decent price. 180W is fine, just turn the gain down a bit. Better for the amp to have a bit of headroom anyway so its not running flat out all the time.
At 17.8 x 4.95 x 44.0 cm its a pretty damn big amp!
What do you think they would be like compared to the Focal or Alpine? I know Alpine and Focal have good reps, but never really heard much about Audison.

Audison are great SQ amps. 180w is a good amount of headroom as well.
I've heard of problems with customer service through audison (on the off chance you need to return it faulty). But they still have good build quality, I'm sure marty would be able to sort you out either way.

Looks like a good option if you can fit it in.

We've installed around five hundred Audison 'SRx' series amplifiers now and have only ever had dramas with two. One was soaked with water and the other somehow burnt a terminal block.

However, there are a lot of rumours going around about Audison and so I'll let the Audison importer (a.k.a RMA) explain. This is taken from CAA when someone asked a similar question:

Yes occassionally an Audison will break down, as will an Alpine, Pioneer, Focal, DD, Rockford etc. etc. etc. Do they break down more often than other brands, I do not believe so, we have an exceptionally low instance of faults due mainly to the amps being built right from the start.

So the people who will have bad things to say will fall in to one of two camps:

1) Those who I seem to have mortally offended when I have suggested they read their owners manual before doing further stupid things that may further damage their Audison amp - they will always insist they did nothing wrong.

and lastly
2) Those dealers who can't source the product so "can" the product to get your interest off Audison. I note that you are in WA where Audison is sold exclusively by Westside Car Audio, as no other shop in WA can source Audison product don't be at all supprised if a shop states the product has issues and that is why they dont sell it I know one opposition chain store was doing that at one stage.

I am sure FHRX Studio's (NSW), Life Style Store (NSW), Complete Car Sound (QLD), Doran Pro Audio (NSW) and many of the leading Autobarn stores Australia wide would not sell and recommend a product that has reliability issues ( I have only listed a few of the better known names that stock Audison rather than a long list) I also believe that it should not be too hard to find many many happy Audison owners on this site.

As the distributor of Audison in Australia my advice is only buy the product if you
a) believe in the product and think its value for money.
b) believe in the shop selling it to you, perhaps talk to one of the reputable dealers I have listed.

There will always be people with opinions, you just have to decide which opinions you will listen to.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me by email phil@rmaudio.com.au

P.S BTW if you are wanting one there will be no stock for about a week, Decembers shipment sold out about 4 days after it arrived in early December.

Agreed... I never questioned their build quality, i just know of two people that have had a hard time when something did go wrong. But I know of many more who have not had any problems at all.

In the end it all got sorted though, and I'd still (and do) recommend Audison amps.

Just do it

Peace

Tim

The Alpine is supposed to have a damping factor of nearly 100% - still trying to confirm this its not on Alpine's website.
Where the Audison is 280.
I probably wont be able to tell the difference, but that and the fact that the Audison is a huge amp compared with my limited boot space... hmmmm

I will vote for Audison, SRx2s puts out a lot of power for only drawing 35A. Yes it is big but it is sexy. I have had Audison for over 2 years now, never had any major problems at all.

i havnt read this thread, but these last 2 posts, i see the srx 2.s has made the short list, i got one in my car, heaps of grunt and its a great amp, 180rms x 2 @ 4 ohms, mines running a set of focal 165kp's and theyre loving it (they told me so :P ) im gonna be doing a bitof switching around soon (eclipse xa4000 to run active front stage) and ill be keeping the audison and bridging it to run my sub, any way, the 2S gets my vote :D

OK looks like there is 3 choices... I have been trying to find all the specs for the 3 to compare and have found as much as I can. Now I don't know a heap about amps, but those that do, which of the following is good/bad etcetc and what should I be looking for?

Focal FP 2.150
Power (RMS): 2x150W @ 13.8V
S/N Ratio: >100aB (A)
Damping Factor: >500
THD:
Freq. Response (-1dB): 10Hz-35kHz
Input Impedance: 13kohm
Input Sensitivity: 0.2-5V
Xovers: 50-150Hz 12dB/oct
Idle Current: 0.8A
Weight: 4.8kg

Alpine PDX-2.150
Power (RMS): 2x150W @ 14.4V 1% THD
S/N Ratio: >100dB
Damping Factor: Have been told 100 but can't find specs
THD: <= 1%
Freq. Response (-1dB): 20Hz-20kHz
Input Impedance: 10kohm
Input Sensitivity: 0.2-4V
Xovers: 30-400Hz 12dB/oct
Idle Current:
Weight: 2.7kg

Audison SRx2S
Power (RMS): 2x180W @13.8V 1% THD
S/N Ratio: 95dB
Damping Factor: 280
THD: 0.03% 1kHz 4ohm
Freq. Response (-3dB): 4Hz-50kHz
Input Impedance: 15kohms
Input Sensitivity: 0.2-5V
Xovers: 50-350Hz 12dB/oct
Idle Current: 0.9A
Weight: 3.3kg

Thanks heaps,
Pete

well the freq response on the audison is a heap better than the others (is the frequencies that can be played...not sure wat frequencies the speakers can handle)

hmm still say based on size, specs, and the name, Audison sounds the way to go, but i'm biased (even tho i havent bought one yet!)

The audison has been superseded, not sure about the others. Are you buying new?
Have you spoken to FHRX as he is getting the new LRX's?

Poita
04-02-2007, 07:03 AM
Yeah I'm buying new.
No I haven't asked about the new LRx's...

Marty? If you could send a PM that would be great...
Cheers
Pete

well if its been superseded then ur at the point where u can save a fair bit Poita :) buy one of the last ones, rather than a new model (which wont be able to be negotiated down)

get more for less money :)

you keep saying its such a big amp.... its not really, with all the filtering features it has and the grunt it puts out, its pretty reasonably size, you've got a 3rd gen yeh? they mount very easily on either side of the boot (behind tail lights) or on the back of the boot :)

Yeah problem is I already have 2 amps which will be mounted in the sides behind the tail lights, so this amp will have to be either made a feature install under some perspex of something in the middle of the floor or tucked away somewhere out of sight... so the bigger the amp the more hassle and expense in the install...
