As the title suggests, is there anyone here that has a KAAZ LSD in their 3rd gen? If so, what is the part number?

Thanks in advance.

Mate,

As you posted in another thread, you said you would not install a cusco LSD because the "clunk" and "groan" during low speed cornering. My research indicates that the same characteristics apply to a Kaaz diff (I was told this by the workshop in Adelaide who apparently installed a Kaaz diff in a TL magna down there).

Alas I haven't been able to get a part number out of them. They were reluctant to order the diff used in the TL owers car because it was a rare, non-returnable unit that they probably wouldn't be able to sell to anyone else. They asked that when my diff centre had been removed - I ring them back so that they could get me (my mechanic) to verify some measurements before they ordered the unit from Japan.

I didn't directly ask them for a part number - but I'm assuming that would be stretching the friendship because they would end up loosing a sale out of it.

At this stage - because my diff center has not yet been removed from the gearbox, it looks like the best option for me will be to get a Cusco unit from RPW. The price is almost identical, and it looks like RPW will have the units on the shelf earlier than I could get a Kaaz unit into the country.

I'll PM you the details of a wrecker I found who is sitting on a 5spd manual ralliart ;)

Good luck with the Kaaz research and getting one..

When i did my box the second time in Aug last year i did lots of research on kaaz and couldnt get enough info or a diff.. after nearly 2 months i gave up and went with a Cusco through RPW.. Dave was the only person i could find to supply to as i did lots of research on that too.. I did overseas research too..

Was all to hard so i went with Cusco and RPW..:)

Good luck with it..:)

I have a reply from the KAAZ, do you want me to ask.

For sure!

Definately. Once we all know what the part number is, the AMC community can benefit from it. :) That's what this forum is all about. :)

Thanks all for replying. And thanks Mike for your PM's.

has anyone looked into the US market. I'm sure there'd be multiple units for their 2nd gen diamantes as there is for the 1st gens

No reply from KAAZ. Pretty poor service/information sharing so far.

If someone has the time / ability to pull out a diff center and take various measurements from it - I can put them in touch with a workshop in Adelaide who will be able to confirm the measurements against their sales history, as they claim to have installed a Kaaz diff into Ian Eddy's Improved Production TL Magna. If they are able some specific measurements they will be able to order a unit which will fit the car.

I've spoken to these guys, and Ian Eddy - and apparently there was no modification required to the driveshaft to fit this diff.

I might have gone down this path myself - but I will be getting a Cusco unit from RPW as his order will be in the country first. Also I was quoted $1628 inc. GST (landed in Adelaide) for this diff unit, so there is no real cost benefit compared to the Cusco units.

And by the sounds of it - these Kaaz units are as (if not more) aggressive as the Cusco Units RPW sell. So if you want an LSD but don't want the clunking / groaning at low speed cornering - then you are out of luck by the sounds of it.

only other option i guess is the ralliart/FTO LSD but different type of LSD all together.you dont get the clunking, but you get clutch plates with a potential used by date

So is the Ralliart unit a clutch pack type LSD? or a "viscous" type LSD?

I've heard that viscous type LSD's have a pretty short life span. Pretty sure I read somewhere that after 60,000 miles, a viscous LSD will pretty much only be functioning as an open diff.

...
It's neither, it's a Torsen(torque-sensing) Helical Gear LSD as Mitsubishi like to put it, they are designed by Quaife, they don't use clutch packs or viscous couplings just gears to achieve the Limited Slip characteristics...

Cummins.

well I have a reply from KAAZ. they will not put anything in writing, I have to phone them.

There's the explanation of a torsen style lsd. Since they're purely mechanical they're a **** load stronger at the compromise of clunking and groaning at low speeds, instead of little clutches or fluid slipping.

They have their weaknesses. If one wheel lifts then they act as an open diff. If this happens a lot they wear out *very* fast, just ask Quaife.
