ok i have 6x9's running off a 512w rms 4 channel amp along with a jbl gto 120d i think sub which is about 1000w max...
 now..
im not sure whether or not there is not enough power to the sub or the sub cant handle the doseage but it distorts when the bass is cranked...
 my thoughts are its not enough power, so i wondered would it be worth it keeping the amp to run the 6x9's and possibly some 4inch 2ways up front and getting a seperate mono for the sub?? and if possible maybe a guideline to what power rating i'd need. 500rms?maybe for future upgrades in the sub area
comments very welcome
max
how would the sub handle this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-Precision-Response-Class-D-820W-amp-RRP-399_W0QQitemZ330077851116QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4950QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
im possibly thinking of upgrading to a 2ohm alpine type r sub, how would the amp handle that?

your subs max watts isn't really a true power reading, so don't go try and feed 1000 watts into your sub, cause you can say by by to your sub. It'll prob have a rating of about 300rms, which is what you need to judge things by.

post up amp model number etc, and specs if you have them/can find them, then we can see if its bridgable etc.
also do this for the amp and the 6x9s
...
please :P

Get a more powerful amp or put the sub in a more efficient enclosure.

there you go the specs
JBL GTO75.4 4 channel amp
JBL - GTO936 6x9's
JBL - GTO1200B (the box does not do it much justice, the porthole makes the worst noises due to amount of airflow being expelled) http://www.strathfield.com.au/images/SimpleProducts/Medium/GTO1200B.jpg

your distortion problems are either not enough power to the sub (as in your expecting it to do more than it can handle) and also your amp isnt set up right for it
how high are your gains turned up?
it would be better to buy a seperate mono block for the sub and use the 4ch for your speakers

Probably just the sub at its limits mate. :doubt:

Id agree here and suggest the amp hasnt been setup right. If you go on to Car Audio Australia they have tonnes of guides and stuff for tuning an amp.

cause 4" are a straight swap in 2nd gens unless you wanna start hacking into your door trims

JBL GTO75.4 - 104W RMS x 4 @ 4Ohms, 284W RMS x 2 @ 4Ohms
GTO936 - 100W RMS
JBL GTO1200B - 250W RMS
so the 6x9's get 1 channel each, and you have the other 2 channels bridged for the sub? Well seems ok, maxing out the power on each speaker tho, even the sub...
my thoughts are its not enough power, so i wondered would it be worth it keeping the amp to run the 6x9's and possibly some 4inch 2ways up front
no 4" speaker will handle 100W RMS, so bad idea...maybe some splits? (will require cutting the door panel).
and getting a seperate mono for the sub
a 250W mono amp? why bother?!
how would the sub handle this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-Precision-Response-Class-D-820W-amp-RRP-399_W0QQitemZ330077851116QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4950QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
your sub only handles 4Ohms, and at 4Ohms this amp puts out 400W RMS...your sub is rated to 250W RMS...feel like blowing up your sub do you??

No

is maxing out a bad thing, i know it is when its 300watts but 30watts????
i just thought its better to be safe than sorry when it comes to power, maybe not.
so all your saying all in all is that i should check the gains and tune the amp?
