93 TR 4cyl....timing chain breaks. oil pump is dead, no oil pressure. mechanic has it half stripped back and is doing further investigations.
what are my options? how much (ball park figure) to repair? am i better off getting a reco-ed engine? or is it time for the wreckers and get a new car?
 sux being broke lol

Having the same thing almost happen to me, I would suggest just getting a new engine and be done with it.
My timing chains were almost gone, they ate into the tensioner, the fiber from the tensioner ended up blocking up the pick up, which then lead the cam shaft to seize from no oil, which in turn caused a few pistons to hit a few valves and caused a fair bit of wear on the cam shaft and the head, both got replaced.

I don't what the 4cyl prices are...but I'm getting a timing belt kit put through my 6 next week (timing belt and various seals), as well as the alternator belt, aircon belt, and the water pump, for $844. A timing belt on its own (for the 6) goes for $100.

u might not need a new engine. at most the head, oil pump, new timing chain and seals and possibly pistons. you might have been lucky enough to only bent a few valves, so id wait to see what your mechanics says before buying a new engine just yet. but that does suck id hate to have my astron break it's timing chain.

new engine imo, you can pick them up cheeper these days. depends if u want reco or (high or low) milage. that way hopefully you'll have less drama's. is yours carby or injected?
that way u can have a lot of stress taken off you, cos u wouldnt be stress about 'whats gonna happen next'
anyway thats me out

yeah its efi.
ill see if my mechanic comes back with any other issues. if there is anything else it definately looks time for reco engine...even a cheap one so i can sell it and upgrade perhaps.
anyone want a 2nd gen with no working motor? tranny still perfect new suspension? :bowrofl:

Did you manage to find out how much it's going to cost you?
For a 4cyl, If it's going to cost over $1000 get a new engine for sure.

Sounds like the balance shafts chain went, or broke as well, that's the one that drives the oil pump.
Wait for the mech's quote and shop around for a new motor in the meantime (price wise). Then you'll know wha to do...
how much 4 the suspension and your spark plug leads?
buy a new set of leads for $50 from repco!!! Assuming you have the TR GLX carby?

mech hasnt got back to me yet. yeah i think it is the balance shafts chain - that makes sense. im prepared to pay up to 1k. most of the money will be taken up in labour! the engine is half stripped so thats where the cost is involved!

cost me $1100 when mine went but the starter motor went at the same time and a few other lil things to...plus it was done doggy last time so took more labour to fix...

IT's a bloody big job because everything is so awkward to get at, especially if the head has to come off. I've done it myself 2 or 3 times....

how do you know if the chain is on its way out? is it that constant ticking that sounds like a lawnmower? or is that just the guides? my 4cyl has done 245,000 and i dont think chain has been replaced yet.

if u only want chains an nothing else i think we can arraign a day for you!!!

Dude if they have never been changed the guides are most likely worn and yes the tappets could be hammered as well
