Hi,
I have a TJ '02 Exec Sedan.
Recently purchased the following: JVC head unit 50W x 4 max power (line out 2V)
: Pioneer 6" x 9" 4way speakers (420W max power)

I am looking at getting some splits for the front.......What size should I get? 6.5" spilts.
What I want to know is ................ Will I need or would I be advised to have an amp to drive these speakers I have/plan to get?

I appreciate your assistance.

Regards,

Thomo

Hey man, im currenlty running pioneer 6X9's in the back, and pioneer 6" in the front, with a pioneer deck deck, and it sounds prittty good, if you really want more power i would hook up a amp to the 6X9's. and run the splits off the head deck, or just get a 4 channel amp, and run everything off the amp.

The Pioneer 6x9's are good, fairly cheap when on special and decent sound quality.

Yep, 6.5" in the front. You should mount them well on a 'custom' MDF mount. Custom as in you will need to cut it out yourself. Third Gens have this awful plastic baffle they sit the speakers on from the factory. Best to remove it and make up something from scratch.

Search for 'Door Preparation' and you will find heaps. S_tim_ulate has a good set of doors, as have a couple of other guys.

Don't forget the deadener to stop the rattles you will get!

You could just go for the basic Pioneer splits for the front, however they are expensive for what you actually get. Better value elsewhere. I'm a big fan of Hertz, but the other main brand you will be recommended is Focal. A touch more expensive than the Hertz.

If you like doof, go the Hertz. If you like more Rock than dance, go the Focal.

A 4 channel amp of at least 75WRMS/ch is highly recommended too. I have mine under the passenger seat. I'm running a Audiobahn ATM.

I am looking at amps on ebay.
Anyone know about brands such as american boss 2 channel 1600 watt amp?
Overkill or crap?
400w 2 channel Soling amp
or
a 1300w 4 channel Powervox amp.

I dont want a competition class system, just a good clean sound at an affordable price.

Thanks for your advice

Absolute pieces of sh!t that gear is mate, stay away! Sure they're cheap but trust me, spend the extra $100 and get jaycar, you'll never look back.
But in saying that you don't NEED an amp, your deck will play your new speakers alright, just don't expect clear and loud to go together :).

I think my little Audison would make more power than that 1600W Boss thing and it is a 170W amp.

Do what Mitsimonta said, splits in the front amped and make sure you sd your doors. :D

Thanks Maddog.
I appreciate you calling a spade a spade.

I share you're thoughts. I suspected they were rubbish, but since I have the family and 2 kids theme happening now.................i'm out of touch with modern brands.

Only reason I ask advice is that I live at Jervis Bay, NSW..... the closest town is Nowra which is a hole.........and only has autobarn and supercheap to choose from.
Aint no JB hifi or Jaycar here which is why I'm looking at the ebay option for sourcing my system.
I only need splits for the front, and perhaps an amp if I want some boost for the rear, well thats what I believe anyway.......I don't have faith asking a 18 year old kid advice on a sound system............they'd tell me I needed everything including the kitchen sink for a good system.
All I wanna do is cruise to work listening to tunes, and having the option to "turn it up" when a dynamic tune comes on and be happy!
I guess living ina regional area has its downsides for shopping.
I could go to wollongong and visit JBhifi....but thats like an 1.5 hrs drive.....sif.
Being a family man, its hard justifying that much time away from the clan, let alone the fuel!
Cheers!

Haha no worries, if you buy one of the cheaper brands from ebay, they won't last long at all and don't even think you have any kind of warranty. Let alone some of the amps on there sound worse than some headunits :P.

"Megatron" sponsors this club and currently has a special on the 4x100wrms jaycar amp which is $240 - I have this amp and swear by it, will work with your fronts and rears perfectly and has plenty of room to upgrade later and/or take a sub if you decide to get one.

It's hard to tell whether you need an amp, as your definition of loudness and clarity is probably different to mine.
If i was you i'd start off with the headunit and the speakers, then if you're not happy with the way it sounds get the amp later on. The speakers will sound pretty good running off the headunit, just don't expect them to keep clarity at higher volumes, but then again like i said it depends on what your definition of "loud" is ;).

Maddog,
How can i purchase that amp.
It sounds like a bargain.
Is there a link?
I had a look on this site as well as the megatron site and couldn't see it anywhere.
But......... I am friggin tired. Looking after a 3yo and 9mth old solo today while the missus was on a course.
I would prefer to purchase online due to my locality.

Once again, thanks for the help.

His forum is the very last forum which is right down the bottom of the page so it's understandable :). Best thing to do would be to check out that link, then contact megatron via pm, postage costs are usually pretty good too.

Thank-you very much Maddog, and everyone else who has offered advice to me.
My system is almost ready to go in the car.
I contacted Alan (megatron) from the link you posted Maddog and ordered the Response 4 x 100 amp. He is posting it to me at a small charge.
I investigated thoroughly, and he is the cheapest by a long shot.

I purchased a set of Clarion 6.5" 200W splits yesterday from Autobarn.....reluctantly as I had to use a Xmas voucher......they were on special.......but still dearer compared to some other suppliers. Bloody Autobarn!

As soon as this amp arrives in goes the new system.
I will most likely give the standard magna head unit a new home at the bottom of the sea when I take my class of cadets out for training on the ship!
Its my 3rd factory stereo replaced under warranty by mitsubishi......they dont like the tropics i reckon!
