wouldn't the easiest way be to replace your TJ grill with a TE-TH grill and letterbox that? (but then you'd need a new bonnet)
The problem I see with letterboxing a TJ grill would be the "beak" that come down from the bonnet

I did my own (prototype) about a year ago and I actually thought about making these for AMC members but I never got around to it.
My tip is to leave the solid centrepiece in for strength.

Letter box slot grill (wide open grill with nothing in the middel) is virtualy impossible on a TJ
with the bonnet beak. Best way is to get the TH bonnet and grill and letterbox the TH grill.
The best way would be to cut out all the cross hatching and mesh both sides as seperate parts. (you wont see the middle bit anyhow as the beak of the TJ will cover it)
Grab yourself a dremel and a few plastic cutting bits, some masking tape and a few beers.
Tape up all around the cross hatch to prevent any burrs when you cut them out.
Proceed slowly and carefully untill all the middle on each side is removed.. Sand it a little, grab some matt black paint and respray the grill, attach some mesh and voila! TJ with 'letterbox' styling..
Buying a TH grill is only going to cause you headaches.

yep, cut out the "mesh" and thats it, i'd put some neat wide black mesh behind it when your done and it will look tops

For those who dont like chipped paint on the mesh, which looks crap after a while, go get the mesh powder coated. Doesn't cost much and will last a whole lot longer. Its what Mitsi's do with the mesh in the Evo's.

And here I was thinking Mitsubishi use a paintbrush on those grilles...
The TJ Ralliarts have a letterbox grille If I'm not mistaken, I remember seeing a letterbox style grille for one (labelled Ralliart) on eBay a while back, I could be wrong!
