howdy all.

well my auto finally gave up the ghost the other day from 240+k of towing a trailer....now i have no OD and 2nd is probably going to go any second.

has anyone actually done a manual conversion to a 2nd gen before? i figure that i may as well do it now because i really dont want to spend $2000+ on another ghey auto lol

i know a few members have done it to 3rd gens but i am unsure if its the same deal with the tr ts models.

i basically need advice on how to do the whole conversion, but my main concern is what do i do with the ECU? do i need to change it to one that comes out of a manual or do i need to do some splicing with some wires?

there is the wire for the neutral and park switch. its a black/yellow wire. it should be near the selector for the auto i think. according to the haynes manual the black/yellow wire should go to a black/blue or black/yellow wire. you should see both when looking at the shifter mechanisms. if you measure voltages on the different wires it should go positive on P and N and nothing on the others. this is the wire to connect to. the other will have voltage all the time.

this may seem confusing but if you need help with the wiring or with the install im glad to lend a hand if you need it.

that is all the difference in the engine control system. do you have cruise control?

you will also need the manual instrament cluster if you dont want PRND etc on the dash

u might find ur answer in there

forgot to metion is it v6 or 4cly. cos if it's 4cly u'll find all the info in the first gen section seeing as a few of the members have done it to there astronII which is almost the same as 2nd gens.

its a v6 with out cruise.

thanks for the links smooth.

imm just real worried that im going to bugger something up. i had a guy to do it....but didnt listen to me when i said to get the gearbox....now its in a cube :(

plus id like to save the $700 on labour maybe....but if i cant do it.... *shakes head while looking at EFTPOS card*

would there be a certain order in what i would need to do first? ie take auto out, fit clutch pedal and cylinder stuff, fit gearbox ect?

id say auto box out first so you can get to everything. clutch hidrollic lines.

yeah thats what i thought.

now where is this inhibitor switch that im meant to earth? is it near the auto stick or near the auto box somewhere or is it the plug that is next to the selector part on the tranny?

also what do i do with all the plugs that come off the auto? just leave them unplugged when the manual goes in?

you dont ground the switch in my above post i described what should be done. it is the plug on the auto itself. can you take a pic of the connectors on the auto so i can see the wire colours.

well i just got back from pick a part in campbelfield and scored a manual shifter mechanism, clutch pedal and cylinder and line for $49! i think he missed some stuff lol....ah well me 1, pick a part 0!

next thing is to find a gearbox, fly wheel and shifter cables. any idea if the shifter cables are the same from a 4cyl to 6cyl?

they'd be close but not quite right i reckon, rememebr different g/box with different mount, i wouldn't risk it.

nah i wasnt going to risk it. im just going to buy a v6 one anyways. but the clutch pedal, and shifter mechanism are the same.......i think..

the switch as in the OD switch on the shifter? or the plugs under the shifter? of the plugs on the auto box itself?

cause in the haynes manual it says theres a switch that tells the ecu that its in park, neutral. these dont ground as people say. it goes from power through switch to ecu so only will it start when positive goes to ecu. unsure what voltage. but if the switch has the wires im looking for i think i can see them on the first pic, then all you need to do is join the two wires eliminating the switch. as if you still had the auto you would be able to start in drive.

ahh i see. well i will get the photos asap for you.....if you can work it out that would be great! im guessing its very similar to the 2nd gen 4cyl aswell......as in the shifter and wires and stuff seeing as they are both 4 spd autos with OD and PWR buttons....so maybe doing it the same way as the 4cyls have been done?

been looking at the haynes manual for wiring and auto info. so far from the pic youve posted ive got these wires.

yellow/black = power into the switch for p,n
black/blue = goes to the ecu so you can start the car.
red/green(i think) = power for reverse switch
red/blue = power to the reverse lights.
yellow/red = ??? yet

other wires cant see there colours. could you tell me the colours please anthony. cheers i will keep looking through. at this point it looks like you will have to join the yellow/black to the black/blue. the red/green will go to the input on the manual gearbox. the red/blue from the manual will go to the red/blue of the auto wiring. do you have a multimeter at home?
