Title : DIY EL Gauges/ Dials Installation
What: This modification will give you a white back ground dials during daytime and a reverse EL lights of blue and red at night time. The speedometer is in MPH with KPH underneath.
NOTE: These gauges may not provide you an accurate readings, be aware. Also, it is always wise to consult your insurance company and your state guidelines before making this modification.
Disclaimer: I will not take any responsibility for any damage cause by this modification.
You'll need: Set of EL Gauges/Dials, Philips and flat head screw driver, wire striper/cutter, vinyl tape, power switch (optional)
Difficulty: Difficulty level = 1.5 (scale 1=change oil, 10=engine change over)
ETA: 1.5 to 2 hours
Instructions:
1. Remove the steering cover
2. Unscrew the plastic gauge bezel and remove the rheostat plug connected at the back.
3. Remove the bezel.
Taking out the gauge
4 Remove the 6 screws located around the gauge cluster.
5. Slowly pull towards you the cluster until it unplugs the back connection.
6. Grab the connection at the left side of the cluster and unplug.
7. Take out the cluster from your car and place it on top of table.
Disassemble the cluster
8. Remove the clear plastic cover by pressing/pushing the locks
9. Do the same with the black face cover.
Attaching new EL face plate
10. Start by inserting the tip of the speedo needle to the face plate, then slowly move it until it fits (no need to remove the original one).
11. Do the same to tacho, fuel and oil gauges.
12. For the rest, remove the original plate and replace it with the new ones.
13. Return the covers (NOTE:pass all the wires at the top of the gauge cluster).
Wiring the EL
14. Attached all the connections to the inverter.
15. Flip over the cluster and look for (+) connection
16. Connect the (+) wire. ( I placed mine with one of the bulb, remove the bulb and insert between the terminal and plastic cap)
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o248/MagnaTech07/bulb.jpg
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o248/MagnaTech07/DSC00070_1.jpg
17. Go back in you car, connect the (-) wire. (I connected mine to one of the 2 bolts
located inside where I pulled out the cluster).
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o248/MagnaTech07/DSC00071-1.jpg
18. Test if working, yes return back everything, if not check the switch or you might have a wrong connection.

And with the EL guage lifespan, its not really worth worrying about would be thousands of hours surely, just relay them into any point that is triggered by the parkers and you'll be fine. Having to flick extra switches is tacky imho (less is more). Every time your lights are on your dials should be on
The radio has a light input u can splice into that. otherwise theres heaps around the place.
Peace
Tim
This may sound big and complicated work but it's not .

I thought about that actually, but since "EL" has a limited life, I decided to install the switch. Maybe that's the reason why there's a switch included in the kit. Sometimes you don't really need to turn it on, like when raining during daytime, etc. But you got a good point there.

will be doing mine 2moro with pics if its cool enough, would have done it today but its about 40 in perth so im drinking jacks and coke in the pool later.
I think they will look better just using the circular bits, the other bits look tacky, thats what im doing anyway
meh
ps: what flavour was that free little bag of rice with the gauges? they were nice

I like to know how you do it this way. do you connect up to the parkers?
I did not like the switch method.
Uhh find the parkers positive wire and wire that into the EL's power?
I like the switch idea because like he said, EL has a limited lifespan. This one's a thinker.

Just adding a few notes to MagTech Excellent writeup.
Test the needles to ensure they come down and not get stuck halfway. Else you will get a speedo or a half stuck rev guage that goes up and doesnt come down.
If you want to use the white pieces for the indicator arrows high beam and cruise control, then get some coloured bulbs or you get yellow light. I recommend paste the original and the white one over the original so that they match and saves you money on having new bulbs. This goes same for the Engine check, Passenger seat belt, brake light etc.
If you want you could use Narva leds to do the trick as well. These globes are a bit nasty as they dont light up till you get the contact right.
Follow Magtech's excellent sollution for wiring up and you should be fine.
If you want them to light up without the switch, there are a few ways about this. I cut the switch wiring and wire to the ash tray + lighting. You wont even need to bother about the other wire, it will light the EL dials.
I am sure many have done several ways but this thread should be able to help.
Enjoy the pics.

Noice!
but... Mph?
Yeah is sad, but its the next coolest thing than spending a lot for a new sports white cluster.
On the note, do check your cluster bulb works after you placed the wire + into the globe holder as the lighted globes help to light up the needles.

Added to the DIY links (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45652). Magtech if you get a chance can you edit your first post and write it up in the format. Otherwise no nevermind, I'll do it when I get a chance. (Or I'll forget about it whatever comes first.)

Err too late, magtech just re did it and updated his initial posts.
Plz include info on the usual question of the MPH vs KMPH deal.
To get the correct kmph reading on THESE gauges simply double the MPH reading. (ignore the kmph reading on the inside) Yes this is not the correct mph to kmph conversion rule, but is related to the calibration of the magna speedo and the positioning of the mph marks in relation to the stock kmph marks.

also, if anyone is buying this from ebay, remember to get at least 1 extra inverter (they're only an extra $5 each). cos they seem to die pretty quickly.... and you'll find it very hard to take apart the inverter and resolder cos the circuit is filled in with this hard epoxy/plastic/hard **** stuff that you pretty much need to chisel at the plastic casing to get to...... .
and also just to add another pic....

My inverter died within a week. It kept turning off at random and wouldn't come back on. So i bought another from the US, which could change colour and had a dimmer also. But no off button. I could put one in, which isn't hard, but cant be bothered. I just turn it right down.
You can buy those inverters seperate, i asked about it, and going to get a spare soon, just in case.

Just figured out an easy way to wire it up and relay it so the light switch turns it on / off. Don't even need to buy a relay.
And you can do it all from the outside of the car.
Just wired it up then, (has been on my todo list for a while now) not sure if I like them yet. The stock green used to match my headunit perfectly
I'll give it a run around and make sure my way doesnt blow the inverter then let you all know.

I have a set of these from a while back and was considering putting them back in, but am wondering whether anybody has managed to get these through a NSW or any state/terrority rego inspection? This is the main reason I took mine out originally because I thought it would fail with the MPH reading being more prominent than the KPH. Thanks

Despite the fact that they are incorrect, from a compliance point of view it looks like it still has km/h on there even thought they dont line up at all.
Worst case in 30 minutes you could get them off again.
where can i get these from link anyone plz
