View Full Version : To Sprintex or Not to Sprintex, that is the question?

OK, heres the dilema. The Sprintex supercharger kit is half paid for and at Tweakit in Sydney ready for installation.
However the guys that have had it put on their cars recently, seem to be having some issues.
So do I go ahead with it, or save the cash?
I'd like to hear from the guys who have had the Sprintex supercharger kit for a while and from the ones who have had it put on recently.
Is it worth the money? Are there quality issues? Is the performance increase worth the $?
.
I know lots of people have opinions about which way to go with mods, but I really want to hear from people with the kits! $7,500 is a big outlay on something that may not be worth it!

mate go for it, i personally took one for a spin today thanks to mic and i was loving it, very torquey and they sound beautiful, if i had a V6 i would be charging it no doubt, it will bring a smile to your face guarenteed, u may have read about the ecu issues aswell, but its nothing a full piggy back computer cant fix and will also add some extra KW's aswell!!
but its your money so do what you feel is right!!
good luck!

Matt, thanks for that mate.
I was hoping to go without using a piggyback as thats an extra cost on top of the kit.
I just wanted to do the kit and spend a little extra on Headers & a high flow cat.
The only other upgrade planned later is improved suspension with springs, shocks & sways.
(The VR-X AWD suspension is good, but not firm and flat enough for my liking.)
Has anyone used the piggyback, or a different type of ECU yet with the sprintex??

Mate i would do it if you are half way there...
My install went flawlessly and up until now i haven't had a problem.
(Im guessing it all their fault anyway coz it was working when i dropped it off lol)
The only ECU "issue" is that it was running rich but that is by design quoting from Steve from Sprintex.
You won't regret it. I know i didn't.
Just quitely i was watching my Vid (coz i miss my car ) and i got goosebumps haha

woohoo i have a fan!!!
mate it is worth it on so many levels. not many modifications take 2 days and give so much in return
power is awesome, especially on a cold dry night the car hammers like there is no tomorrow!!
the sound is priceless, i doubt anyone could ever get tired of that sound! I was at the drags last wednesday night driving around in 1st gear between idle and 3,000RPM and everyone turned their head to see where the sound was coming from (and i mean everyone!) when i popped my bonnet and walked away, gremlin asked me if i knew who those people were near my car. i turned around and there were 8 or 9 people looking under the bonnet is shock. the sound alone is worth near half the total cost
im a little worried about the tune, the car is going back on tuesday to get a check on why it ran lean on the dyno that day *cought* 195kw atw *cough* but the tweakit boys have been very helpful and willing to make sure the car is perfect!
i guarentee you will not regret it at all!!!

because your car is an Automatic and not a manual i would not recommend supercharging it. but that is only my opinion and not everyone elses.

the reason why i don't think the auto and sprintex should be paired is because of sheer lack of power loss through the torque convertor. Sorry to say but the 2 automatic sprintex charged auto magna down here really aren't THAT much quicker that my stock dual fuel manual 3.5!
I don't think the 4spd one would even beat me but he is too scared to actually give me a run! i wonder why :doubt: Whereas against the 5spd tippy i keep upto about 100+ and thats even with a bent input shaft on my gearbox and bits of gear floating around and making crunchy noises!

Tristan has only ever run a 14.9 It was only when he passed the car onto a more "experience" driver it did a mid 14.. I too also stated i kept up until 100 or so... i don't know about you, but i don't top out at 100km/h down the 1/4 mile:confused:

i would have to dissagree there choonga, i still think a supercharged 3.5 auto will smash a stock 3.5 manual, i dont care if it is manual in the long run the auto will have more power just due to the boost, you may keep up for a certain amount of time but eventually the SC auto will overtake and win, of course this is imo, i would be sourcing a shift kit for the auto if i were boosted, just to get that extra punch down the Qmile!!

Didn't we agree in a thread ages ago a supercharged auto was about on par with a manual ralliart?
Anyway it's not always about getting a car that will be the fastest, some auto owners may just want a little extra kick and still be lazy in peak hour traffic.
Personally i'd keep the auto as i love it, and look into improving the auto, maybe getting a different stall converter/torque converter or whatever it's called, bigger cooler etc.

yeh spot on, a place here in melb does shift kits for the magnas although they cost 1k i think it would be worth it and may even shift better than a manual, ive heard in some cases that autos with quality shift kits have beaten manuals down the Q!!

IMO comparing the stock auto box to the AWD auto box is a little misleading.
The AWD box and running gear are from the EVO, so while you still get power loss, it's a much tougher and reliable combination than the older Magnas. Auto trans cooler is included in the kit.
AWD is a heavy car, you need some extra punch to get it going.
It's never going to be a Drag Strip beast, but according to AWD owners like Dogs who have the kit, they are well pleased with the results. :D

if you have a 4sp auto don't bother unless you are planning to change the gearbox in the near future.
Otherwise do it!!

Well my supercharged AWD flogged a manual VRX, and its only running the normal sprintex tune. More than two car lengths to 100 kmhr without even using the tippy to shift.
Advice: get the kit fitted and wait till someone does an aftermarket ECU, you will easily see 200 kw atw and a torque curve like a hemi.

I highly recommend it!
neither Jase nor myself have any problems (although it is early) with our kits installed by the Tweakit guys. they have done quite a few installs, and I have no complaints about them.
since you are having doubts, maybe you should try to get a ride in (or even drive) a car that's been done. then you'll be able to compare the difference to your current car and decide for yourself whether it's worth it.
for the first weekend that I had my car back I found myself opening the garage door many times and just standing there with a huge grin on my face!! :D
cheers,

Considering its a drive in drive out 2 day job with
warranty (assuming you have low kms).
Its stress free power increase.
Coz of the AWD auto, you won't be the quickest at 0-100.
But your in gear torque when rolling is awesome!
Try it against most cars at 60kmhr to 100kmhr and you'll smash em.
Also where ever you go, the moment you hit 3500rpm to 5000rpm
every car and his dog will turn to look! Priceless... :)

actualy i tend to dissagree there, when mine is uning sweet and it's not even tuned i can spool up almost 2900rpm in D get off the brake and the fromt tyres chirp on dry tarmac as it launches really hard (ash tray falling out, nech smapping back, subs going all over the place lol) i think it can possibly be quicker 0-100 than the fwd's but it's over 120km/h where the 2wd models will eat ya..... although due to my funny tune my car accelerates quicker 180-200k's than it does 120-140k's  there is a massive noticable difference....
for the one day my car was running really good i could get it to get a lil bit sideways in the dry under power

I think you wouldn't be too far off the pace about the take off with the supercharged AWD vs the supercharged FWD, but think about what the difference is like on a slippery surface or exiting a corner under hard throttle.
The sprintex on FWD or AWD will allow you to win the occassional traffic light derby against:
Standard WRX (to about 70 or 80 kmhr)
XR6 (to 100 kmhr)
XR6T (to 60 or 70 kmhr)
VE Commodore SV6 (all the way)
RX8 (to 100 kmhr)
Older LS1 powered Commodores and Utes (to 100 kmhr)
Anything with an XR8 badge and auto up until the Boss 260 was released
380 and Aurions (all the way)
N/A Porsche Cayenne (all the way)
But you will get soundly beaten by:
Current VE six litre
XR6T when driven hard, particularly the typhoon
Manual Boss powered falcons
WRX STi
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
And anyone who has modified their car with the objective of traffic light derbies.
However, most people don't expect any competition from a Magna, so you may well upset a few of the performance marques and its all over before they realise it.

I think you'll find that has more to do with the gearing than the tune. 120-140 you're probably ringing the neck of 3rd gear, and probably just in the "sweet spot" in 4th at 180.

Well so far it looks as though just about everyone (except a few) recommends getting it.
I'd still like to know if anyone has done anything with a piggyback or replacement ECU yet?
This is the earlier list of the Sprintex roll call -
Dog13s - tippy (AWD)
Jaz72d - tippy (AWD)
Andrewd - tippy (AWD)
Heathyoung - tippy (AWD)
Tbb - tippy (verada)(AWD)
Cittris - tippy
VR-X II - tippy
Wookiee - tippy
MicJaiy - auto (verada)
ReallyArt - manual
Slays - manual
Tzaboy - manual
Phil - manual
So there are a few guys who have the kit and haven't posted their opinion on the Sprintex.
I'll try and catch up with Tzaboy is Sydney, or Wookiee in Canberra to check their cars out.
If Dog13e is still about I'd like to see the install on an AWD with 5 Spd Tippy, or where are you located heathyoung? I'm down in Wollongong.

Mine is still sitting with the deposit on the kit, and the rest in the bank, the car has front-end damage, so I cannot switch insurance companies until it is fixed, and I cannot get the kit fitted until I switch insurance companies.
What a PITA.
I'm located in Newcastle.
