Hey Guys,

I recently drained the oil tank of my car. I re-filled it with 2 liters of good oil. The dipstick is still dry. I'm a novice when it comes to this. Is there something wrong with how the dipstick is reading or do I have to put more then 2 liters in to register on a previously empty tank? It's a Verada KS 1994

You haven't said what model this is but you need something like 4.5 litres. Do not run it until you fill it correctly.

More like 5 litres.

Did you change the oil filter and prefill it as part of you oil change?

Keep putting oil in until you have a reading between the lower and upper notches on the dipstick.
I usually tip in most of a 5 litre can, say 4 litres. Leave the engine for a couple of minutes for the oil to percolate down to the sump. Check the dipstick, then gradually top up until between the notches.

From memory it is 1 litre between the notches.

DO NOT overfill, too much and the crankshaft can hit the oil surface when cornering, knocking sound, doesn't do the oil much good to be thrashed by a whizzing crank.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL Until you have put more oil in, Have you made sure you have put the drain plug back in and if you have removed the oil filter make sure you have replaced that and made it tight. Im guessing you bought a 4 or 5 litre container of oil (I HOPE SO) so just before adding the rest, make sure everything is checked before adding any more oil.

NEXT TIME ASK SOMEONE TO HELP UNTIL YOU LEARN

This is a big problem, When novice people try and do things themselves either you make a big $$$$ Mistake or you learn from little ones.

Best of luck in the future if you need any Question answered jump on line and ask, Someone is bound to help...

3.5L engine, 4L of oil, this will throw it to just under the top of dipstick, wait 10mins for all oil to get to the sump, then you will find the oil is smack on the top of dipstick.

Yes but after filling so it is showing on the dipstick the engine needs to be run to fill the filter, let stand for 5 minutes or so and then topped up again to the high mark.

I agree... but not too tight! Really only needs to be half or one turn AFTER the o ring has made contact with the surface.

2L is no where near enough oil. Hope you haven't driven very far with the car like that.

mate, listen to waht people are telling you... 2L of oil isnt anywhere near enough, yeh if you put 2 litles in and ren the engine it will show up on the dip stick, but it isnt enough, like every one has said before (in big, red, bold, underlined writing) give it another 2-2.5 litres before you drive the thing ok
