View Full Version : KJ tailights onto a TJ (need reverse)

Hi everyone

I got some KJ tailights for my TJ and as most would be aware, there is no reverse light in them as the KJs have their reverse lights in a centre garnish next to the number plate.

To resolve this, I propose to take the reverse light loom and globes from a spare set of cracked TJ tailights I have lying around and retro fit them into the clear indicator lense of the KJ tailights by making another hole. Making them fit in there should be simple enough.

However, I was wondering what is involved in connecting the reverse light loom and ensuring that they work? Is it just a simple matter of tapping the reverse loom into the KJ loom in front of the white plug (which connects the main car loom to the tailight loom) and it will work itself out? Is there a particular wire in that KJ loom or perhaps even the main car loom I need to connect it too? Because the tail, brake and indicator lights work fine, I just need reverse.

My thinking was that when the TJ tailight is connected, the reverse light works, so if I connect the TJ reverse onto the KJ loom, it should work too. I am going to muck around with it on the weekend, but was keen to see if anybody knew beforehand.

I don't wish to buy the KJ centre garnish as I have seen others with these tailights on AMC member TJs and even THs without it. So there must be a way.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

On my TH, it appears the wiring loom is the same for both Magna's and Verada's across at least the TJ/KJ and TH/KH range. It was as simple as plug and play when I put on the KJ tail lights and boot lid.

For wiring up your reverse light bulbs into the KJ tail lights, there should be the feed for reverse lights in your existing loom where the tail lights go... Should be as simple as just cutting that wire, extending it and attaching it to the bulb, and then the other side of the bulb to ground.

My thinking was that when the TJ tailight is connected, the reverse light works, so if I connect the TJ reverse onto the KJ loom, it should work too.
... spot on.

Good stuff. What I'll do is see what wire is missing from the KJ light that the TJ light has, match that to the car tailight loom and that should determine which is the reverse feed I need to tap into. Hopefully they are colour coded but if not I'll just do some testing until one triggers the reverse light. Either way, it should faily be easy to do now. Thanks for your help.

wire colour is red with a blue trace for power in both magna and verada, neg is black.

Was speaking to EGO about this... he was going to wire it up so both indicators come on and stay on as the reverse lights. It's legal since that's how old Torana's do it.

Wouldn't it be as simple as Transfering the sockets and wiring loom on the cracked TJ lights to the Verada lights and then drilling a hole for the reverse socket/bulb? Then it would simply plug into the main connector as normal.

That's a great idea, the only issue I can see being that the KJ has an additional red small tail lamp at the top which would then not illuminate plus the sockets might not be the same size. But if they are, it could be as simple as tapping the wire from that extra lamp wire into the TJ loom so something to definitely consider and might be easier overall. I have to take a closer look on the weekend but thanks for the advice everyone, this is very helpful!
