Hey,

I recently had a near new gearbox fitted to my car. After the gearbox was installed the car wouldn't start, it was taken down to an auto electrician to have fixed. They couldn't find anything wrong after checking everything electrical. They then moved the gearstick up and down through the gears and with a loud clunk sound the car started. I picked the car up that night and drove it home, it drove like a dream, really smooth gear changes! I parked the car outside my house where it sat untill 7pm the following night. I started the car which worked perfectly well, like normal. I got in and moved the gear stick into drive, dropped the handbrake and put my foot down to go fowards and the car just rolled backwards and revved like it was still in neutral! After further examination I found that every gear except park did this. Park works fine but every other gear R, N, D, 1, 2 and 3 all seem to be the same as neutral. The car rolls in all of these gears and theres no power, just alot of revs!

Does anyone know what this could be? I cant believe how many things go wrong when I dont even drive my car the majority of the time.

Thanks,
Daniel

Just as a experiment put the car into drive put your foot down to between 2000 and 3000 rpm and hold it there for 5-10 secs and see if it moves, this is what my auto did and it needed a full recon.

thanks mate but I allready tried that. The gearbox only has 26,000km on it so it should be fine. Its also got brand new trans fluid in it and all.

I don't know the TE but at a guess I'd say that the selector lever is connected to the box by a cable and that it is out of adjustment or even is not tightly clamped at one end.

How do I adjust the shift selector?

Take it back to whoever replaced the gearbox and get it fixed properly.

Take it back to the place who installed tranny. Must have some sort of warranty, I second selector. Don't bother with mucking around with it. It's also good education for the installer.

The shift selector is fine. I reckon the passenger side driveshaft is broken. Could that be what is causing the problem?

My car has now been to various workshops and I still have no idea why it dosn't run.

It went down to a driveshaft and cv specialist yesterday and they couldn't fault the driveshafts. They said that the gearbox isn't even trying to turn the driveshafts though. They didn't know why though. They said that its very unlikley to be an electrical problem (its been to an auto electrician but no faults) The shift selector is ok aswell, the shifter cable is in perfect working order aswell.

Someone suggested that the shaft from the engine to the gearbox could be broken and that could be why it just freerevs and dosn't make the car accelerate!

Someone must have some idea why my car dosn't drive. I hope someone can help.

My car has been booked into regency park inspection station 3 times to get my defect notice cleared and I've had to cancel it all 3 times. I need the car drivable again to remove the defect notice.

get them to check the "thing" (there something in the gear box that is used to meause the speed of the car) that connect to the speedo

from my little knowledge of auto trannys if that part is faulty it will not select a gear

The vehicle speed sensor doesn't get a mention in the diagnostics for this fault.

Here is the relevant page from the Workshop Manual.

Not neccessarily, I've seen lots of cars with broken driveshafts, and all you get is a revving effect, with no drive, and no abnormal noises!
Mate, if so many mechanics have looked at the problem, and can't work it out, I'd advise to have the vehicle towed to a Mitsu dealer, to at least, have it diagnosed properly!
They have the gear and experience, and I'm sure they could give you some direction into the cause of the fault!
Good luck
