hi all. got a few questions concerning burning oil and whatnot.
for the past week or so ive been smelling oil burning from the engine bay and have noticed a bit of white smoke from under the hood when at idle when i get home or after a drive.
i just bought a new oil cap as the other one was leaking so im thinking that will solve my problem and the smoke is just burning the exess oil on the block from a previous spill and blown gasket. any others had experience with this sort of issue? other causes for this.

also a mate of mine driving behind me said i blew a bit of white smoke. 'yeh i blew my turbo'lol so im assuming im burning oil somewhere inside as well. need to do an oil change pertty soon so im gonna try some cylinder lube or smoke stop stuff from work. reckon this would work?
thanx, big 4

White is usually steam
Blue is usually Oil
Black is unburnt fuel

yeh well i just found my sump to be covered in oil which would explain the constant lack of oil. so im guessing its the oil seals that are rooted. got a quote to get them fixed, 200-300. ill keep calling around tho
more retarded money!

this is a very easy fix. do an oil change and while ur doing that change the gasket. make sure all the oil is drained out. undo the bolts holding on the sump. clean the mating surfaces very very well. put on the gasket and tighten it hand tight only then go 1 or 2 turns past that. then fill it up with oil and replace the filter. run it for a minute to check for leaks and to make sure u have enough oil in the. also buy a tube of gasket goo just incase but u shouldn't need it. if u over tighten the bolts the gasket will get crushed and leak or even wosre brake a bolt of in the sump ( i know cos i did that:rant: ). there's alot of members here that can gide u step by step.

awesome smooth2! thanx heaps. although im assuming its the sump seal but not 100% sure.
i planned on doing an oil change this week. steps would be very appreciated. although how do i make sure its the sump gasket?

before u do anything make sure u know where the leak is coming from. so grab a can of degreaser and give the engine a clean with the degreaser , don't get and degreaser on any electrical parts, and dry it off after the best u can. now start the car with the hood up a watch where the leak is coming from. hate u to go and replace the sump gasket only to find out it's another gasket.

so if it is the sump gasket and u want to make sure u get the right one. you could always drain out the oil take off the sump clean the gasket and take it with u to the auto store when u buy the oil and filter. repco, auto barn, auto one should have what u need.
then put on the gasket do up the bolts just alittle past hand tight, put on the filter and fill up . thats pretty much it. common sense helps and any question just ask. im about to go to work but there should enough members here to answer any question u have.

Probably most likely the front timing cover oil seal...

Again, easy job to do.

Instead of guessing why not tell him how to find the oil leak???? Ever taken the sump off a second gen with engine still in?

Give the engine a good clean, and I do mean a good clean.

DO NOT CHANGE THE OIL for 2 reasons, when you change what ever gasket may as well change then and dirty oil is easier to trace than fresh.

Run the engine and look to see where it is coming from, then rectify and change.

Places may be Oil sender, sump, front or rear oil seals, timing cover (un usual) rocker cover, rocker cover bolt seals, water pump seal. Have seen a few leak between the head and block but htis is rare. ANother place is the inlet manifold where the fuel pump woudl have been if it was not an efi motor.
