View Full Version : Chattering/Whining noises...

Vinh

notice the car makes a chattering/whine noise and it comes from the bit indicated in the picture below. (the pic isnt my car, just a 96 model but looks the same as my 97 model)

(This might be the cause proberly.. not sure.. One morning sat in the car and started it.. i heard like a noise kinda sounded like a AAAEEEERRRRRRRR cant remember but it was like a week ago, anyways paused and thought doesnt sound right, wind down windows and yeah it was making a noise, so i turn off engine and turn back on.. the sound went away and never heard of it again)

Anyone know what the problem is?

I have a 97 magna advance, 120,000km.

Hmm, yesterday..

Took it to a mechanic, the guy turns off engine, takes out dipstick looks like oil is between the 2marks on the dipstick but the oil was kinda darkish..

He tells me that I dont have enough oil and oil is dirty that it needs a change and might be the problem to the noise...

So i agreed to get oil and filter changed on the spot for $45.. took about 10mins...

He used something in a grey bottle branded mobil i think.

Im sure he used 'mobile XHP plus' instead of the other 3.. since thats what he tick and stunk on my car screen.

So the noise is still here :/

Sounds to me like your timing belt needs to be replaced, mine is doing the same, and its very loud while the engine is cold...

But without hearing the noise myself i can't say.

$45 to change the oil is a bit steep!

Check any belts... I think I'd be going with Blake on this one, timing belt..

/me looks at the photo a little more

I sorta miss that battery cover... Just because of wank factor I suppose... My TJ doesn't come with one..

Does the sound sound like it's coming from inside the engine, or just around there...? Is it a constant, rhythmic sound or somewhat erratic?

Vinh

A mitsubishi mechanic said it was a lifter noise maybe but it will cost me for them to take stuff out and take a look :S I asked how much it was to replace, he said $45 per a lifter and you need 24 of them.. I asked totol and he said very well over $1000... :S

But yeah Im hoping its the timebelt, please let it be!

BTW blake what noise does your engine make?

Night.. Its coming from that area but not sure if its coming from the grey top thing or whatever is under it.

BTW where is the timebelt located in the pic?

Timing belt is down left side of the engine in my car.. I don't see why it would be any different in yours..

There's a manual somewhere around on the website for 6G72 engines that will give you everything you need to know on replacing the timing belt yourself, however if you don't know what you're doing, I really don't recommend doing it yourself. It's a good read though..

Yep, must be timing belt, any chance its camshift belt aswell?

Its very loud from a cold start, Drove aroundand parked to pay a bill then came back, the car wasnt as that loud in the morning. (so we know its timing belt since loud on cold start)

There is a high pitch wistle / chatteing sound though. (still no idea unless timing belt makes this noise after a cold start and stays this way the whole trip?)

Hey Vinh,

Some possible noises it could be is if the belt tensioner is wacko - i dunno - they get noisy sometimes - and the big rattle I have - bloody irritating noise!!! - that you shouldn't have to worry about is the thrust bearing in my manual gearbox - but therer is nothing inside the grey thing - proper name - plenum, so the noise could be wha the mechanic said - but why you would have to replace all of them i dunno - and i thought yours was the 3L?? umm, do botht eh 6G72 and 6G74 have 24??

"Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you..."

ahahaha... Vinh, you're a crack-up at times.. I've never met anyone that's pays so much attention to their car... I've driven a car around with a loose timing chain before and not actually known until the garage told me something was wrong... Another time I started up the car, reversed it out of the driveway and drove off finding that there was a lot less power than usual... Turns out the engine was firing on three cylinders as the high tension circuit had collapsed... Not a Mitsu, but lol... (Actually a Hyundai... You get what you pay for, I suppose...)

Good to see you're slowly learning though =D

thats me, nothing yet. im at 120,000 now.

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=296 is the thread of what was on the last paper of service at 105,000km.

SYNRGY
06-05-2003, 04:34 AM
when is the main service? it wasnt at the 105kms.....was it at the 90 000km service?

the 105 km service should be around the $1000 mark due to replacing all the drive belts etc.

Vinh
06-05-2003, 04:36 AM
That i dont know, the log book just has stamps and no ticks or anything else written.

There was only that piece of paper from the last service at 105,00km.

SYNRGY
06-05-2003, 04:43 AM
read your service history and look for a main drive belt or drive belt or something......the main service normally is way over $500...i reckon your drive belt hasnt been replaced. maybe im wrong but im pretty sure im right

Vinh
06-05-2003, 04:49 AM
yeah service history just indicated on what need to be changed etc... but out of them 3 services... it just shows stamps and no ticks on what was done in them service (guess the mitsubishi mechanics were proberly lazy). The only thing that indicated what was done the paper I had and it was only 105,000 that showed what was done :/

is drivebelt also known as timebelt or something different?

Yeah i also agree with you, maybe timebelt hasnt been changed.. aussiemagna has the same problem as me.

Loud on cold start up, after driving the noise isnt as loud but there is still a chattering/whistling noise when u park car and listen to engine :/

Used to have a simmilar problem on my TE.

apparently there is a tensioner that works its way loose as the belt ages and as the belt stretches it starts to flap around a bit and resonates up and down. makes a lot of noise but only when at idle or starting.

They tightened up the belt and found it was fine!

Good luck with it!

SYNRGY
06-05-2003, 02:02 PM
yeah get it fixed by a mechanic....we are guesssing but no one really knows the problem.....and vinh watch out for didgy mechanics....they will replace one thing and it wont fix the problem and then you keep replacing all the parts they think is causing the problem only to find you dont have any money left to fix the REAL problem

Vinh
06-05-2003, 04:12 PM
Yeah im saving money to aim at mitsubishi mechanics, since they got lots of jobs and dont seem like the people who would play around with me.

.............Ok back to topic................

I had to take my sister to school this morning and slept like at 3am.. grr..

The car isnt as smooth... If i hit the pedal to the metal to about 80 then let go of the accelerate, the car jerks and the speed didnt go smoothly to 0. it jerk at about 75-70 then it went kinda smooth with little noticeable jerks.

So yeah the car basicly has small jerks, it dont feel like the car is going to stall, nothing major like that but I really notice the small slumps/jerks now and then... It feels ****ed.

The picture below, got back to my house, left the motor on and listen, I put my head close from right to left and i think the sound is coming from the red circle.. Sorry nothing percise but its from that red circle area.

So does this timebelt have effect with the jerks? I read somewhere that timebelts lose might miss a few teeths and slump in power.. but then again i just scan read thats all, a week back.

Come on car guru's and mecanics

If its a rattle coming from there it could either be the belt or just abelt tensioner - they can get noisy sometimes.

Apart from that - not my area sorry mate!!

the only time my car slumps is when i have no foot on the gas and it slows to the point where the revs are too low for the gear and starts to get annoyed at that - so unless the auto is holding gears too long - i dunno!!

With all the worrying you are doing.. Just take the car to a Mitsubishi dealer and unload all the questions you have on them...

Im positive they will know alot more about it then us..

Another idea is sell it and buy a push bike.. You can easily sort out any problem you have with a push bike..

buy a skate board if u r after the safety of 4 wheels rather than 2 haha - jokin vinH - I am sure your car is fine and is making normal car sounds - the only way to check is get someone else with the same car next to yours and then listen for differences
