I don't know if this is normal for 3rd gens and if its been covered before and i just can't find it but i've realise that my fuels guage works strangly..

Going from full to
1st quarter - 200km
to half tank - 150km (350 total)
to 3rd quarter - 120 km (420 total)
to empty - 80km (500 total)

give or take 10km

first time i looked at it i thought if i get 200 out of a quarter then i must get 800km out of a full tank in the rada hahahahahaha

btw did a couple of tanks just to make sure it wasn't driving style.

I suppose it would have something to do with the shape of the petrol tank?

It does have a little to do with the shape of the petrol tank, the condition of the sender and the linearity of the fuel gauge.

The AWD's with a split tank and two senders (IIRC) are even weirder.

In every single magna that I have owned I have found that the first half of the tank went for bloody ages... the middle half was ok but the bottom half was like a kid sucking down soft drink... Althou my km's vary, I keep an eye on it every h/way travel I do, half tank 390/400, usually bout 720k's before I find the nearest fuel station...

I always found that when the needle is horizontal, it moves the fastest. It's really quite funny to watch. I get about 200km from the first 1/4, 200 from the next half, and then I usually go and refill, so that's as low as it's gotten.

Here's mine:

From full to top notch, 50km
From top notch to 2nd notch, 50km (100km total)
From 2nd notch to 3rd notch, 50km (150km total)
From 3rd notch to 4th notch, 40km (190km total)
From 4th notch to 5th notch (halfway), 40km (230km total)
From 5th notch to 6th notch, 40km (270km total)
From 6th notch to 7th notch, 50km (320km total)
From 7th notch to 8th notch, 50km (370km total)
From 8th notch to amber light, 50km (420km total)
From amber light to empty, 90km (510km total)

Ofcourse, the above varies depending on how I drive, total can be between 470 to 540km.

oh and i also notice that if i turn it off n then back on again i can gain 1/2 notch or even a full notch as it gets closer to E, one time the light came on, did about 15km with it on and then stopped for 5-10min at the bottle shop n when i turned it back on it didn't come back on for another 30km????????

Yep, I'm exacttly the same with my TF. I always put it down to tank size.

Mine does the same thing. Just not quite so economically.

yeah, lol, we all know what you're saying! Just means instead of filling up with 60L when its almost empty you'd have to put in 90L! The extra weight of the 30L of fuel will actually reduce your fuel economy :D

Thats another good reason to get fit, lose 15kg to get better fuel economy :D then you can put the extra money towards beer!, and since you're lighter you get drunk quicker, you save money by drinking less beers. The added bonus is that you wouldn't need to take as many beers when going out, giving an extra saving. It means fewer trips to the liquor store, saving an additional amont for travel let alone the extra weight of that carton of beer. With all the talk of Global warming, you can do your own part by losing weight!!! Not to mention methane (fart gas) is 1000 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, and people fart less when they're skinnier? :D

If you don't care about global warming then consider this, by losing weight your car would have a better power to weight ratio :D

Id put it partially down to the tank size. But also driving style, speed and traffic have a lot to do with it. I usually get pretty much the same k's out of a full tank as what the range says on the computer when i fill her up, which is between 700-800k's.
