Meanwhile, Mitsubishi’s plans to launch a four cylinder version of the locally built 380 sedan have stalled due to supply problems. The manufacturer had planned to buy in a four-cylinder engine from Malaysian car maker Proton.

What 4cyl engine from Proton? Because in their current range of cars there is only a 1.6L (not big enough) and a 1.3 4G15 (definately not big enough, and its a mitsu engine anyway). Unless they were looking at the 2L V6, which doesnt look any better than the 2.4L from the lancer....

A 4 Cyl will definately move the 380 with no problems. However without some of the jazz in it, it would give enough power to run the car. It would be a waste not to have a 4 Cyl 380. V8 is out of the question, I do not see why the 380 needs such an Engine. You rather have a whole new car designed for a V8 engine. with the cost of fuel on the rise, I recommend smaller engines but enough power to run cars like the 380.

A FWD V8 380......yeah that would sell well. NOT. And a diesel 380 is a great idea, considering how advanced diesels are getting...its a case of when not if....

an AWD V8 magna would be a winner just because its a v8 dont mean it has to guzzle the fuel fit it with some of that nifty stuff that shuts down un-needed cylinders and its sweet

And where exactly is this V8 motor going to fit with all the AWD components? Plus the cost.....anyone wanna pass the hat around for donations? :bowrofl:

I know what they could have done. They should have re designed the astron motor and make it a 3l 4cyl. They could have called it the Astron III.

Isnt the awd 380 already not in the equation?

The word "ASTRON" means it would used more fuel than the 3.8L donk by a long shot. What they need is a 2.4L 4cyl on par with that of an Accord Euro.

The possibility of an AWD 380 is about as good as a RWD V8 380.....none and buckleys

but i thought the 380 would be too big for the 4 cyclinder engine, cause wouldn't you have to rev the engine harder to do the same work as the standard 6? making it less economical?

I remember reading about the 4 cylinder plan last year but I forget what size/specs exactly... I think 2.0L.
And yes a diesel V6 380 would be great! As for the V8 AWD 380, its a great sounding idea... but will never happen. How much would the thing cost? Not that I have anything against V8s. I'd have 2, a VP Ute and a VL Calais, and am still very happy with my (less thirsty) V6. I know I can't compare 2 V8s of different eras against a brand new V6... so I won't!
Personally, I'd just be happy to see this Ralliart 380 hit the streets!

The 4-cylinder engine they were looking at (If I remember correctly) was the 2.4l all alluminium engine out of the new Outlander.

Keep in mind guys that the 4 cyl plans for 380 have simply "stalled", not been called off altogether. This happens all the time when developing new drivetrains etc. This news doesn't surprise or bother me in the slightest.

adz89 is right, the planned 4 cyl donk was to be a derivative of the current 2.4L all alloy engine in the new Outlander, which according to Wheels mag, sounds like sh!t.

diesel V6 is best idea, we got a jeep turbo diesel V6 and for its weight it goes really well and doens't use much fuel

has anyone on here actually driven the 2.4 lt lancer - proberly not!!
i own 1 now and have for the last 7 months ( 2.4 vrx). in my experience, comparing it to my old 3.5 magna vrx taking in to account the weight advantage ( 300 kg less for the lancer), it is as fast off the line as the magna - a little bitter slower in the 80 - 100 km range when overtaking and anyone who is interested - 40 miles to the gallon or 7.1 lts per 100kms.
will never go back to a 6 cylinder again, i have just placed and order with the local dealership for there 1st new generation lancer vrx they will have in stock when released!!

Yeah, and everywhere else I have read say it comes out in June/July. America gets in in March, that is definite, maybe Wheels is confused with that, or did the release date for Oz come forward a bit or something?

I think March 2008 is the release of the Evo not the Lancer. I think the Lancer is out Third Quarter of this year.

I meant standard Lancer models June/July this year.. or 3rd quarter as you said.....

I was saying the standard Lancer is out in March in the US and I didn't realise dave_au said March 2008...... a few places on the internet still report the Lancer to be released here in March, which is a mistake.... MMC WILL have supply problems once it is launched in the US.

I also heard March 2008 for EVO X as well.

Whatother models are on the horizon? Outlander V6, 380 Update model, 380 TMR, Possibly Delica D:5, Colt Plus and the ' i ' . Any word on the 5-door hatch Lancer??? And is there still talk of a return of the 2 door?

I was considering a TW VR-X last year, but then thought that a Magna was too big really, so settled on a '06 Lancer VR-X! I have to agree, it's great. The Lancer is a much better car than it used to be, especially with the 2.4L block. This is the engine that should've been in the VR-X from the start! The only thing I wish was that they came with some proper sports bucket seats.

I'm also looking at trading it in on a Ralliart or EVO X when the time comes. lol

Lancer hatch will probably come around the same time as the Ralliart/EVO models. I highly doubt the 2-door will make a return, as it was basically a Mirage. I hope MMAL are smart this time around, sticking the 2.0L 4B11 engine into the ES/LS and the 2.4L 4B12 (from Outlander) into the VR-X.

PS - adz89, got that 380 yet? :p

I saw a 380 with P plates a few weeks ago, and it reminded me of you. LOL
